Man Drives To Tamil Nadu To Kill Wife, Then Dies By Suicide At Kerala Home

A Kerala man allegedly shot dead his wife and then died by suicide outside his home on Monday morning. Krishnakumar and Sangeetha, the couple, reportedly had differences which may have led to the murder and suicide, said police. The couple is survived by two young girls - Ameesha and Akshara.

Early Monday morning, Krishnakumar, 52, started from his family home in Vandazhi in Kerala and drove 83 kms to Coimbatore. There, he met Sangeetha, a private school teacher. Allegedly, the two got into an argument following which Krishnakumar shot her dead.

Within minutes, Krishnakumar returned to his car and started the return journey to his home. Upon reaching, he shot and killed himself in front of his father. The man reportedly used an air gun.

Alarmed by the gunshot, neighbours informed the police, who arrived at the crime scene and found Sangeetha's body in a pool of blood, as per the reports.

According to the Police, Krishnakumar had forbidden his wife from being friends with her boyfriend. Several reports suggest that the two were living apart and had discussed legal separation.

Krishnakumar previously worked in Malaysia before moving back and settling in Coimbatore.

"Talking About Humans Or Robots": Akhilesh Yadav On 90-Hour Workweek Debate

Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav has joined the ongoing debate over work hours and slammed those advocating a '90-hour workweek.' Taking to his official X account on Monday, he asked whether such advice was meant for humans or robots. 

Mr Yadav, the former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, said those pushing for a 90-hour workweek should first reflect on whether they followed such practices in their youth.

"If they truly worked 90 hours a week back then, why has our economy only reached this level?" he wrote in Hindi.

He said the truth is that the people sitting at the top get the maximum benefit of the hard work of the youth "without doing anything". 

"These people should not forget that the youth not only have hands and feet or body, they also have a heart that wants to live freely and it is not about working for hours but about working wholeheartedly," he said, calling the 90-hour workweek advice "impractical".

He emphasized the importance of work-life balance and said the quality of work is more important than quantity.

"People want to live with their emotions and families. When only a handful of people benefit from economic growth, then whether the economy reaches USD 30 trillion or USD 100 trillion, it makes no difference to the common citizen," he added.

"True economic justice is when everyone gets the benefits of prosperity equally," the Lok Sabha MP said, adding that it was "not possible" under the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

He also said that a mentally healthy environment fosters creativity and productivity among young people, which in turn helps build a better nation.

He also attacked those advising to forget the entertainment and film industry.

"Entertainment and the film industry contribute billions to the economy. It helps people feel refreshed, revived and re-energized, which ultimately improves work quality," he said.

They also add billions of rupees to the economy, Mr Yadav said.

"A sinking boat cannot be saved just by advising people to swim," he added.

The 90-Hour Workweek Debate

The 90-hour workweek debate was triggered by Larsen & Toubro Ltd chairman SN Subrahmanyan in January, who called for employees to work on Sundays as well to maximise productivity.

"What do you do sitting at home? How long can you stare at your wife? Come on, get to the office and start working," he had said, adding that he works on Sundays too.

His remarks, however, led to massive social media outrage, with many questioning the fairness and ethics of such an extreme and demanding work model. 

Earlier, Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy had suggested that youngsters should be prepared to work for 70 hours a week to boost productivity.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has also backed long working hours. Last month, he said that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) employees work 120 hours in a week

"There are way easier places to work, but nobody ever changed the world on 40 hours a week," he said in 2018.

In Siding With Russia Over Ukraine, What Is Trump's Strategy?

Has any nation squandered its diplomatic capital, plundered its own political system, attacked its partners and supplicated itself before its far weaker enemies as rapidly and brazenly as Donald Trump's America?

The fiery Oval Office meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday saw the American leader try to publicly humiliate the democratically elected leader of a nation that had been invaded by a rapacious and imperialistic aggressor.

And this was all because Zelensky refused to sign an act of capitulation, criticised Putin (who has tried to have Zelensky killed on numerous occasions), and failed to bend the knee to Trump, the country's self-described king.

What's worse is Trump has now been around so long that his oafish behaviour has become normalised. Together with his attack dog, Vice President JD Vance, Trump has thrown the Overton window – the spectrum of subjects politically acceptable to the public – wide open.

Previously sensible Republicans are now either cowed or co-opted. Elon Musk's so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is gutting America's public service and installing toadies in place of professionals, while his social media company, X, is platforming ads from actual neo-Nazis.

The FBI is run by Kash Patel, who hawked bogus COVID vaccine reversal therapies and wrote children's books featuring Trump as a monarch. The agency is already busily investigating Trump's enemies.

The Department of Health and Human Services is helmed by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a vaccine denier, just as Americans have begun dying from measles for the first time in a decade. And America's health and medical research has been channelled into ideologically “approved” topics.

At the Pentagon, in a breathtaking act of self-sabotage, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered US Cyber Command to halt all operations targeting Russia.

And cuts to USAID funding are destroying US soft power, creating a vacuum that will gleefully be filled by China. Other Western aid donors are likely to follow suit so they can spend more on their militaries in response to US unilateralism.

What is Trump's strategy?

Trump's wrecking ball is already having seismic global effects, mere weeks after he took office.

The US vote against a UN General Assembly resolution condemning Russia for starting the war against Ukraine placed it in previously unthinkable company – on the side of Russia, Belarus and North Korea. Even China abstained from the vote.

In the United Kingdom, a YouGov poll of more than 5,000 respondents found that 48% of Britons thought it was more important to support Ukraine than maintain good relations with the US. Only 20% favoured supporting America over Ukraine.

And Trump's bizarre suggestion that China, Russia and the US halve their respective defence budgets is certain to be interpreted as a sign of weakness rather than strength.

The oft-used explanation for his behaviour is that it echoes the isolationism of one of his ideological idols, former US President Andrew Jackson. Trump's aim seems to be ring-fencing American businesses with high tariffs, while attempting to split Russia away from its relationship with China.

These arguments are both economically illiterate and geopolitically witless. Even a cursory understanding of tariffs reveals that they drive inflation because they are paid by importers who then pass the costs on to consumers. Over time, they are little more than sugar pills that turn economies diabetic, increasingly reliant on state protections from unending trade wars.

And the “reverse Kissinger” strategy – a reference to the US role in exacerbating the Sino-Soviet split during the Cold War – is wishful thinking to the extreme.

Putin would have to be utterly incompetent to countenance a move away from Beijing. He has invested significant time and effort to improve this relationship, believing China will be the dominant power of the 21st century.

Putin would be even more foolish to embrace the US as a full-blown partner. That would turn Russia's depopulated southern border with China, stretching over 4,300 kilometres, into the potential front line of a new Cold War.

What does this mean for America's allies?

While Trump's moves have undoubtedly strengthened the US' traditional adversaries, they have also weakened and alarmed its friends.

Put simply, no American ally – either in Europe or Asia – can now have confidence Washington will honour its security commitments. This was brought starkly home to NATO members at the Munich Security Conference in February, where US representatives informed a stunned audience that America may no longer view itself as the main guarantor of European security.

The swiftness of US disengagement means European countries must not only muster the will and means to arm themselves quickly, but also take the lead in collectively providing for Ukraine's security.

Whether they can do so remains unclear. Europe's history of inaction does not bode well.

US allies also face choices in Asia. Japan and South Korea will now be seriously considering all options – potentially even nuclear weapons – to deter an emboldened China.

There are worries in Australia, as well. Can it pretend nothing has changed and hope the situation will then normalise after the next US presidential election?

The future of AUKUS, the deal to purchase (and then co-design) US nuclear powered submarines, is particularly uncertain.

Does it make strategic sense to pursue full integration with the US military when the White House could just treat Taipei, Tokyo, Seoul and Canberra with the same indifference it has displayed towards its friends in Europe?

Ultimately, the chaos Trump 2.0 has unleashed in such a short amount of time is both unprecedented and bewildering. In seeking to put “America First”, Trump is perversely hastening its decline. He is leaving America isolated and untrusted by its closest friends.

And, in doing so, the world's most powerful nation has also made the world a more dangerous, uncertain and ultimately an uglier place to be.

Video: US Firefighters Tackle Wildfires In Carolinas Amid Dry, Gusty Winds

Firefighters in the United States' North and South Carolina have been battling dozens of wildfires over the weekend, prompting authorities to order some residents to evacuate. The blazes were fueled by dry weather, gusty winds, and unusually high temperatures. 

As of Sunday, the largest fire was burning 1,200 acres near the coastal city of Myrtle Beach. Moreover, the US National Weather Service has warned of increased fire danger in the region due to a combination of critically dry fuels and very low relative humidity.

Dramatic videos from South Carolina showed firefighters battling flames as the fire neared houses. So far, no injuries have been reported due to blazes, according to American media reports.

The new blazes come a month after devastating blazes in Los Angeles that are expected to be the costliest in US history, with some expecting losses as high as $35 billion.

South Carolina

In South Carolina, where more than 175 fires burned 6.6 square miles (17 square kilometers), Governor Henry McMaster has declared a state of emergency to support the wildfire response effort after officials declared a statewide burn ban. The governor said the burn ban would remain in effect indefinitely.

Meanwhile, firefighters have made some progress in containing a fire in the Carolina Forest area, west of Myrtle Beach, where residents had been ordered to evacuate several neighborhoods, according to Horry County Fire Rescue.

Video from the area showed some people leaving their houses as smoke filled the sky. However, by late Sunday afternoon, the fire department announced that Carolina Forest evacuees could return home.

By Sunday evening, the South Carolina Forestry Commission estimated that the blaze had burned 2.5 square miles (6.5 square kilometers) with 30 percent of it contained. 

"No structures had succumbed to the blaze and no injuries had been reported as of Sunday morning," officials said.

North Carolina

In North Carolina, the US Forest Service said fire crews were working to contain multiple wildfires burning in four forests across the state.

The largest blaze, about 400 acres (162 hectares), was at Uwharrie National Forest, about 50 miles (80.47 kilometers) east of Charlotte. The Forest Service said Sunday afternoon that it had made progress on the fire, reaching about one-third containment.

The small southwestern town of Tryon in Polk County, North Carolina, urged some residents to evacuate Saturday as a fire spread rapidly there. The evacuations remained in effect on Sunday. A decision on whether to lift them was expected to be made Monday after intentional burns are set to try to stop the fire from spreading.

That fire has burned about 500 acres (202 hectares) as of late on Sunday, with zero percent containment, according to the Polk County Emergency Management/Fire Marshal's office. 

The North Carolina Forest Service was conducting water drops and back-burning operations on the ground, and area residents should expect a lot of smoke during those operations, officials said.

Officials have not said what caused any of the fires.

Bhavish Aggarwal's Ola To Cut 1,000 Jobs. 500 Were Laid Off In November

Ola Electric Mobility Ltd. is laying off over a thousand employees and contract workers, people familiar with the matter said, as one of India's top scooter-makers races to pare ballooning losses.

The cuts at the SoftBank Group Corp.-backed firm, span multiple departments, including procurement, fulfillment, customer relations and charging infrastructure, the people said, asking not to be identified as the information is private.

It's the second round of layoffs in under five months as the Bhavish Aggarwal-led company, which just listed last August, battles crises on several fronts. It posted a 50% surge in losses for the December quarter and has been censured by India's market regulator and consumer protection authority in recent months.

Around 500 employees were laid off last November, according to local reports. The current round of layoffs amount to over a quarter of Ola's 4,000 employee size as of end-March 2024, but includes contract workers that aren't counted in the company's public disclosures.

As part of the restructuring, Ola is automating parts of its customer relations operations, the people said. The layoff plans may change over time as per business needs, they added.

“We have restructured and automated our front-end operations delivering improved margins, reduced cost, and enhanced customer experience while eliminating redundant roles for better productivity”, an Ola spokesperson said in an emailed response to Bloomberg, without addressing the number of workers cut.

Front-end sales, service and warehouse staff at Ola's showrooms and service centers are also being let go as the Bengaluru-based firm revamps its logistics and delivery strategy to reduce costs, the people said.

Backlash

Shares of Ola Electric have plunged over 60% from its peak since a blockbuster IPO debut in August. In recent years, the company has been the target of buyer complaints, social media backlash and market share loss as rivals toppled it from its perch as the sector leader.

On Friday, Ola Electric told Indian exchanges that it sold more than 25,000 units in February with a 28% market share — far lower than the 50,000-unit monthly target Aggarwal said in a Feb. 7 earnings call was the threshold for Ebitda breakeven. 

Ebitda is earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization.

Days earlier, the company had informed investors that its vehicle registrations will be impacted in February as it renegotiates terms with two of its vendors to reduce costs and improve efficiencies.

Once India's dominant electric two-wheeler maker, Ola has been steadily ceding ground to rivals. 

Bajaj Auto Ltd. overtook it as the market leader in electric scooters in December, pushing Ola Electric down to third place after TVS Motor Co., according to the Indian government's vehicle registration data. 

The firm had lost its leadership position in nine of India's top 10 EV markets by December, Jay Kale, an analyst at local brokerage Elara Capital wrote in a Jan. 1 note.

Ola Electric added a record 3,200 outlets in one go in a store launch blitz in December as it sought to expand its footprint and address customer frustration related to shortcomings in service. Local media reports said it was facing as many as 80,000 customer complaints in a month.

Video: Israeli Troops Kill 12-Year-Old Boy In West Bank Raid

Twelve-year-old Ayman Nasser al-Haymouny was visiting a relative in the southern city of Hebron in occupied West Bank when he was shot in the back and killed by Israeli forces last Friday. He was among 16 Palestinian children who have been targeted by Israeli troops in the West Bank since the beginning of 2025, despite them "posing no real threat to the soldiers," an international human rights organization said.

A CCTV footage from the February 21 incident has emerged on social media showing moments when al-Hammouni was killed, shot by Israeli fire. He was rushed to hospital where he died from his injuries.

The killing comes as the Israeli military carries out large-scale overnight raids across the West Bank for several weeks now, including in Nablus, Tulkarem, Jenin and Nablus, according to a report by Al-Jazeera.

Al-Haymouny and his 10-year-old brother, Aysar al-Haymouny, had gone with their mother to visit their grandfather and uncles who lived in Hebron's Jabal Jawhar--an area run by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF). Jabal Jawhar is near the Tomb of the Patriarchs, where Abraham and his biblical family are supposedly buried, a site sacred to Muslims, Jews and Christians. 

On Friday nights, Jewish settlers come to pray there. Prior to their visits, IDF conducts aggressive patrols in the surrounding Palestinian districts. On the fateful Friday night, at about 6.30 pm, al-Haymouny had just run an errand to his grandfather's flat and returned to his uncle Tariq's house when a shot was heard from the main road, according to a report by The Guardian.

On hearing the shots, al-Haymoun and two of his cousins came out of Mr Tariq's house along with another of his uncles, Nadeem al-Ajlouni, who helped a neighbour whose car was shot by the Israeli troops moments ago. Then there is more commotion from the alleyway and another shot, sending the small knot of people scurrying for cover, including al-Haymouny and his cousins. 

The child runs inside the gate of Mr Tariq's house and out of view of the cameras, when another shot rings out from down the alleyway. This was the bullet that is believed to have hit al-Haymoun. The footage does not prove beyond question who fired it, but it does make clear it came from the direction of Israeli soldiers who were advancing on the house and who arrived at the scene seconds later.

Killing Of Children In West Bank

The killing of children on the West Bank is not out of the ordinary, especially since the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stepped up operations in the occupied territory after the Hamas attack of 7 October 2023 and the beginning of the Gaza war. The intensity has increased since the January ceasefire in the strip.

So far this year, about 16 Palestinian children have been killed despite them "posing no real threat to the soldiers," according to the Defense for Children International.

"The failure to hold Israeli soldiers accountable for their violations against Palestinians has effectively given them the green light to continue their actions," Ayed Abu Eqtaish, the accountability program director of the Defense for Children International, told Anadolu.

In 2024, 93 children were killed by Israeli troops. Human rights workers fear the numbers may continue to increase as the IDF brings Gaza techniques to the West Bank, evacuating tens of thousands of people from their homes, flattening districts and loosening further the "rules of engagement".

Big Problem For India vs NZ, Shami May Sit Out Because "vs Pakistan..."

The presence of five left-handed batters in the New Zealand line-up and the slight calf trouble faced by Mohammed Shami during the Pakistan game may force the Indian team management to play left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh in the Sunday's Champions Trophy game. If the Friday's practice session was an indication, then the Punjab pacer in all likelihood will replace Shami, who has recently returned to the national fold following a long injury lay-off.

Arshdeep trained under the watchful eyes of bowling coach Morne Morkel, bowling 13 overs with full run-up while Shami only bowled 6-7 overs with a curtailed run-up. He was not bowling full steam.

During the game against Pakistan on February 23, Shami had received treatment in his right leg from the physios just after bowling his third over of the innings.

The body language of the players during the training session on Friday suggested that India are likely to give Shami a much-needed break before all important semi-finals.

While KL Rahul in his interaction with media was not very sure if India would alter the winning combination despite the temptation, assistant coach Ryan Doeschate, later in the evening, hinted that the bowling line-up could be changed a bit.

Ahead of India's crucial ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Group A clash against New Zealand on Sunday, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate provided an update on Rohit Sharma.
Speaking to reporters in Dubai, ten Doeschate assured that Rohit is managing his injury effectively.

"He's all right. As you can see, he's batting, and he did a little bit of fielding earlier. It's an injury he's had before, so he knows how to manage it really well, and he's on top of it," he said.

The discussion also shifted to the wicketkeeping duo of KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant. While Pant has been on the sidelines, ten Doeschate acknowledged the difficulty of team selection at the highest level.

"It's been very hard on Rishabh not playing, but that's the nature of sport at this level. KL's been good. He didn't get many chances, and when you're batting at six or seven, it's difficult to get proper opportunities," he explained.

However, the former Netherlands international highlighted Rahul's contributions in key moments.

"Obviously, the third ODI in India, he did really well, and that knock against Bangladesh proved crucial in the end," he noted.

"Pathetic Drainage System": Pak Slammed After Afghanistan-Australia Washout

It was a poor drainage system at Pakistan's Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore that saw the Afghanistan vs Australia 2025 Champions Trophy match being washed out on Friday. Rain arrived during Australia's chase at the venue and continued for around 30 minutes. Even that proved to be a lot for the ground's poor drainage system as the match was forced to be called off despite a wait of more than one hour. The ground staff tried a lot but failed to keep the umpires hopeful about the safe resumption of the game. They even used mops and sponges, but the surface was still left with a lot of water after an hour of action by the staff on the ground.

No surprise, the fans on social media lashed out at hosts Pakistan for its poor drainage system at the venue. Notably, this was the third match out of 10 that got washed out due to rain at the ongoing tournament -

Australia made it to the semi-finals of Champions Trophy 2025 after their last Group B match against Afghanistan in Lahore got washed out.

It started raining during Australia's chase and by the time it stopped, the ground got so wet that the staff failed to keep the umpires hopeful. The abandonment saw Steve Smith and co. share points with Afghanistan and move to four points, a mark that took them to the next round.

On the other hand, Afghanistan just have an outside chance. They will need England to beat South Africa by a huge margin to make it to the semi-finals.

Before the rain arrived, Travis Head had scored a quickfire fifty (59 not out off 40) as Australia reached 109 for 1 in 12.5 overs in their chase of 274. Earlier, Sediqullah Atal (85) and Azmatullah Omarzai (67) scored fighting fifties as Afghanistan posted 273 all-out in 50 overs after opting to bat first. Ben Dwarshuis picked three wickets for 47 runs while Spencer Johnson and Adam Zampa also accounted for two wickets each.
