Man Can't Be Held Guilty For Abetment Of Wife's Suicide Unless...: Court

A man cannot be held guilty for abetment of his wife's suicide within seven years of marriage unless there is cogent evidence of harassment or cruelty, the Supreme Court has said while acquitting a man charged with abetting the suicide of his wife three decades ago.

Section 113A of the Indian Evidence Act establishes the presumption of abetment by a husband and in-laws in cases where a woman's suicide occurs within seven years of marriage and she has been subjected to cruelty.

In this case, the man got married in 1992. The prosecution claimed that soon after marriage, the man and his parents started demanding money as he wanted to start a ration shop.

Records reveal that on November 19, 1993, the woman committed suicide by consuming poison. According to the prosecution, she committed suicide on account of incessant harassment at the end of her husband.

Additional sessions judge of Karnal in 1998 held the man guilty of the offence punishable under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) which was upheld by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The Supreme Court said that to convict a person under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the IPC, there has to be a clear "mens rea" (criminal intent) to commit the offence.

A bench of Justice J B Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra said mere harassment is not sufficient to hold an accused guilty of abetting the commission of suicide and it also requires an active act or direct act which led the person to commit suicide.

The top court said courts must remain very careful and vigilant in applying the correct principles of law governing the subject of abetment of suicide of a woman within seven years of marriage or it may give an impression that the conviction is not legal but rather moral.

"This court has held that from the mere fact of suicide within seven years of marriage, one should not jump to the conclusion of abetment unless cruelty was proved. In the absence of any cogent evidence of harassment or cruelty, an accused cannot be held guilty for the offence under Section 306 of IPC by raising a presumption under Section 113A," the bench said.

It said mere demand of money from the wife or her parents for running a business without anything more would not constitute cruelty or harassment. The top court also said that from the mere fact of suicide within seven years of marriage, one should not jump to the conclusion of abetment unless cruelty was proven.

"Had there been any clinching evidence of incessant harassment on account of which the wife was left with no other option but to put an end to her life, it could have been said that the accused intended the consequences of his act, namely, suicide," it said.

The bench said courts should be extremely careful in assessing evidence under section 113A to find out if cruelty was meted out.

"If it transpires that a victim committing suicide was hypersensitive to ordinary petulance, discord and differences in domestic life quite common to the society to which the victim belonged and such petulance, discord and differences were not expected to induce a similarly circumstanced individual in a given society to commit suicide, the conscience of the court would not be satisfied for holding that the accused charged of abetting the offence of suicide was guilty," it said.

Commenting on the ordeal suffered by the man, the top court said the "criminal justice system of ours can itself be a punishment".

"It is exactly what has happened in this case. It did not take more than 10 minutes for this court to reach an inevitable conclusion that the conviction of the appellant convict for the offence punishable under Section 306 of the IPC is not sustainable in law.

"The ordeal for the appellant started sometime in 1993 and is coming to an end in 2024, i.e. almost after a period of 30 years of suffering. At the same time, we are also mindful of the fact that a young woman died leaving behind her six-month-old infant. No crime should go unpunished. But at the same time, the guilt of the accused has to be determined in accordance with law," the bench said.

SWAYAM Plus Explained: How India's New Platform Aims To Boost Employability

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan unveiled the SWAYAM Plus platform on Tuesday. It is designed to offer programmes focused on enhancing employability and professional development through partnerships with prominent industry players like L&T, Microsoft, and Cisco.

Operated by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Madras, this platform aims to extend educational opportunities to both traditional students and working professionals, aligning with the provisions of the NEP 2020 for flexible entry and exit points in education.

By enabling individuals to balance work and studies through online courses, SWAYAM Plus empowers them to enhance their skills and career prospects, thus contributing to India's knowledge economy.

Objectives and features

Enhanced employability: SWAYAM Plus empowers individuals to balance work and studies through online courses, enhancing skills and career prospects.

Industry partnerships: Courses are tailored to industry requirements in collaboration with industry leaders.

Key features: Multilingual content, AI-guidance, credit recognition, and pathways to employment are prominent features.

Implementation and reach

SWAYAM Plus aims to offer high-quality courses with credit recognition, reaching learners nationwide, especially from tier 2 and 3 towns and rural areas.

Value-added services

Value-added services like mentorship, scholarships, and job placements will be provided, creating a digital ecosystem for upskilling and reskilling at all education levels.

SWAYAM, launched in 2017, had enrolled 72 lakh learners by 2023. Now, in line with the NEP 2020, SWAYAM Plus will incorporate courses tailored to industry requirements, developed in collaboration with industry leaders like L&T, Microsoft, and CISCO.

The minister highlighted its focus on building an ecosystem for professional and career development involving various stakeholders such as learners, course providers, industry, academia, and strategic partners.

"Higher education is no longer confined to conventional students but is now open to working individuals too. The NEP 2020's allowance for flexible entry and exit points enables people to pursue education at their own pace. This idea is reflected in SWAYAM Plus, a platform enabling working professionals to manage their work-study balance through a wide array of online courses," he said.

Higher Education Secretary K Sanjay Murthy emphasised the need for contributions from industry leaders and subject matter experts to offer certified courses across different verticals, with content available in 12 major Indian languages.

"Till I'm Alive": Himanta Sarma's "Child Marriage" Comment Leads To Walkout

The opposition Congress and AIUDF staged walkouts from the Assam Assembly on Monday, protesting the decision by the state Cabinet to repeal the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorces Registration Act, 1935.

The AIUDF had moved an adjournment motion to discuss the cabinet decision, which was rejected by Speaker Biswajit Daimary.

The Congress maintained that amendments could have been made to the original bill without repealing it altogether.

The Assam Cabinet on Friday had approved the decision to repeal the Act in a bid to end the social menace of child marriage in the state, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

Responding to the opposition parties' criticism, Mr Sarma asserted in the House on Monday that the bill will be repealed as it is a step towards abolishing child marriage.

"Till I am alive, I won't allow child marriage to happen in Assam," he said.

The Congress walked out of the House for 10 minutes, against the Cabinet decision.

AIUDF legislators initially raised slogans and stormed into the Well of the House, squatting on the floor for over five minutes.

They also later walked out as the Speaker continued to conduct the listed business of the House.

Opposition CPI(M) legislator and the lone Independent MLA, however, remained in the House.

Video: Goods Train Runs 70 Km Without Driver In Punjab, Causes Scare

A major accident was averted after a goods train ran on the tracks driverless for about 70 kilometres in Punjab today, triggering a scare.

Officials said the driver forgot to pull the hand break before getting off the train - that was on a halt at the Pathankot station - because of which it started moving on a sloppy track.

The goods train - carrying stones - crossed about five stations at a speed of 100 km per hour before it was stopped in Uchi Bassi. "The train was stopped after a Railway official placed wood blocks on the tracks to stop the train," officials said.

"No causality was reported in the incident," officials said.

A video of the train, which has gone viral on social media, shows the train passing by a station at a very high speed.

Officials said they are trying to identify any potential safety lapses to avoid such incidents in the future. "The exact reason of the incident is yet to be ascertained," they said.

"Next MS Dhoni In Making": Gavaskar's Sensational Praise For Dhruv Jurel

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar reserved massive praise for wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel after the youngster scored a gritty 90 in the first innings of the 4th Test against England in Ranchi. Resuming from his overnight score of 30, Jurel added another 60 in the first session on day 3, and was only a couple of big hits away from scoring his maiden Test century. However, Tom Hartley clean bowled Jurel to deny him a century in just his second Test.

Gavaskar hailed Jurel for his "presence of mind", likening the youngster to legendary India captain and wicketkeeper MS Dhoni.

"Watching the presence of mind of Dhruv Jurel makes me think he's the next MS Dhoni in the making," Gavaskar said on Sports 18 during commentary.

Gavaskar suggested that if Jurel continues to bat like he did in Ranchi, he'll score plenty of centuries going forward.

"Today he missed out on a century but make no mistake this young man will go on to score many centuries because of his presence of mind," Gavaskar said during the Lunch break.

At the stroke of lunch break, Jurel was cleaned up by Tom Hartley (3/68) after a splendid 90 off 149 balls studded with six fours and four sixes to wrap up India's first innings in 103.2 overs.

Jurel and Kuldeep Yadav (28) kept England at bay for the large part of the first session on the third day after doing so on the final session of the second day evening.

For the eighth wicket, Jurel and Kuldeep put on 76 vital runs while consuming 202 deliveries to settle the Indian nerves, after the hosts had lost a chunk of their batting line-up without any significant contributions on day 2.

Kuldeep perished when England took the second new ball and James Anderson had the batter walking back after an inside edge which rolled onto the stumps.

Once again playing a crucial knock, Kuldeep scored 28 from 131 balls with two fours.

For England, Shoaib Bashir completed his maiden five-wicket haul.

"I Continue To Remain CEO": Byju Raveendran Day After Shareholders' Move

Amidst growing trouble in the edtech firm Byju's, company's CEO Byju Raveendran told employees that he continues to remain the chief executive officer of the company. On Saturday, Mr Raveendran wrote a letter to his employees denying media reports of him being ousted as the company's CEO and called the media reports “greatly exaggerated and highly inaccurate.”

The letter read, “I am writing to you as the CEO of our company. Contrary to what you may have read in the media, I continue to remain CEO, the management remains unchanged, and the board remains the same.”

While saying that it is “business as usual” at BYJU'S, he added, “To reemphasise, the rumours of my firing have been greatly exaggerated and highly inaccurate.”

This comes just a day after shareholders (prominent investors) on Friday voted “unanimously” to unseat Mr Raveendran from the board.

Referring to this vote, Mr Raveendran said, “Just as you can't change the rules of a game midway without agreement from all players, we can't alter how our company is run without following these strict guidelines.”

Further, Mr Raveendran claimed that the Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) violated essential rules. Calling the meeting “a farce”, he claimed that it doesn't count.

He added, “At yesterday's Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM), a lot of these essential rules were violated. This means that whatever was decided in that meeting does not count because it didn't stick to the established rules. It is crucial for everyone to understand the specific issues that make this EGM a farce.”

Talking about the key discrepancies in the meeting, Mr Raveendran said, “The claims made by a small group of select minority shareholders that they have unanimously passed the resolution in the EGM is completely wrong. Only 35 out of 170 shareholders (representing around 45% of shareholding) voted in favour of the resolution. That in itself shows the very limited support that this irrelevant meeting received.”

Mr Raveendran, his wife and his brother are the only three members on the company board as of now. They stayed away from the EGM called by a group of six investors, who collectively hold 32 per cent of the firm that operates Byju's.

Video: Man Threatens Bureaucrat In Civil Dress After Overcharging, Detained

A video quickly gaining traction on social media shows a parking worker allegedly threatening an Indian Police Service officer in civil attire. The man insisted to the officer that he should follow the rules after charging Rs 60 for a Rs 53 parking ticket, saying 'Kayde Me Chalo.'

The video was shared on X by user Sachin Gupta with the caption, "IPS Abhishek Verma is the SP of Hapur district. Today, he arrived at Brajghat seated beside the driver in a private car. While the parking receipt showed Rs 53, Rs 60 were collected. The contractor's representative told the IPS officer to 'Kayde Me Chalo' (Follow the rules)."

The caption further reads, "At present, the parking attendant is in police custody".

A video circulating online shows two individuals in a car inquiring about parking fees from attendants. The attendants inform them of the Rs 60 charge, which the passengers pay. After receiving the change, one of them examines a provided receipt and discovers it states a cost of Rs 53. They then politely request the return of the 7 rupee change.

After defending himself for charging Rs 60 instead of the Rs 53 printed on the ticket, the parking worker asks the men in the car to 'Kayde Me Raho'.  The man replies, "Thik hai, kayde me rahenge. (Ok, I will follow the rules)"

Indian Police Service Officer Abhishek Verma posted a picture of the parking workers in police custody and wrote, "If you stay within the rules, you will be in profit"!!

The Internet users were impressed with the bureaucrat's action.

Commenting on the post, a user wrote, "If other policemen learn a lesson from this incident and roam around in their area like common people, then prevention will be possible even before the crime is committed. How many DMs roam around the area like this? If officials, ministers etc. also leave like this then Ramrajya will come."

Another user wrote, "Hats off to your determination and hard work Bade bhai.. keep going and maintaining "Rule of Law"

"Really appreciable work done by the top cop of Hapur, but I am sure you must be pretty occupied with your daily works, kindly motivate general public who can do sting of such things and send on particular no. issued by ur office under your supervision anyways great work hats off U," the third user wrote.

Gavaskar 'Disappointed' With Root, Trolls England With Reverse Scoop Quip

Joe Root played a very uncharacteristic knock to what England cricket team has been used to playing in recent times. He shunned the Bazball approach with wickets falling at the other end, and took England to safety with a solid hundred on the first day of the 4th India vs England Test. On Day 2, Root remained unbeaten on 122 as India bowled out England for 353 in their first innings. Former England skipper Root scored 10 boundaries during his unconquered 274-ball innings.

Resuming at the overnight score of 302 for seven, Root and Ollie Robinson completed their century stand for the eighth wicket to take England forward.

Former Indian cricket team captain Sunil Gavaskar praised Joe Root for his effort but did not shy away from trolling England's Bazball approach.

"Yes, superb innings. It was a proper Test match innings. Old-fashioned Test match innings, you would say," Gavaskar said while doing commentary on Day 1 of the Ranchi Test.

"But I have got to say, I am a little disappointed. I am a disappointed man because I really wanted him to play a scoop shot to get to his hundred, that reverse scoop. Get to 99, play the reverse scoop, and then play the hundred, and then the crowd goes 'Rooooot'. Particularly the box on our right (England comm box)," Gavaskar added.

England had made a solid start on Day 2, making Indians toil hard without success before Robinson's choice of shot -- a reverse sweep -- off Ravindra Jadeja brought India back in the opening session.

It ended a dogged 102-run stand between Robinson and Root.

In their reply, India lost skipper Rohit Sharma (2) cheaply to be 34 for one at lunch, trailing England by 319 runs. Veteran James Anderson saw the back of Rohit with a delivery that moved away slightly off the surface after pitching on a perfect length, taking edge from Indian captain's bat that was taken by Ben Foakes.

Yashasvi Jaiswal (27 batting) was his usual confident self and giving him company was Shubman Gill (4) at the break.

England added 51 valuable runs to their overnight total of 302/7 as the Indian attack failed to make early penetration. The last five England batters added 241 runs after being 112/5 at lunch on the opening day.

While Mohammed Siraj (2/78) erred in his line and length, debutant Akash Deep could not add to his tally of three wickets to return with 3/38 from 19 overs.

For India, Ravindra Jadeja took all the three wickets to return with 4/67 from his 32.5 overs.

Opinion: Why BJP Should Not Ignore SP-Congress Alliance

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Finally, the deal is done. Those who were predicting doom for the I.N.D.I.A alliance in Uttar Pradesh must be deeply disappointed. The Congress and the Samajwadi Party (SP), after much suspense, like a good one-day cricket match, have reached a decision on seat distribution. The Congress will contest 17 seats and the rest will be fought by the SP, along with smaller parties. The Congress has decided to give one more seat to the SP in Madhya Pradesh, which reflects that the grand old party has learnt its lesson after the historic debacle in the recently held assembly elections in the state. Just to remind readers, during those elections, the Congress, then led by Kamal Nath in Madhya Pradesh, had attacked SP chief Akhilesh Yadav by calling him names, who, in turn, angered and humiliated, went on to equate the Congress with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, now that the deal is sealed, I guess we can say all is well that ends well.

Why UP Is An Important State

Uttar Pradesh is a critical state for any party or political formation that aims to rule at the centre. In 2014, when the BJP selected Narendra Modi as its prime ministerial candidate, he decided to contest from Varanasi, in addition to Vadodara in Gujarat. In fact, after winning both seats, he chose Varanasi and gave up Vadodara. Modi was aware that without winning a substantial number of seats in Uttar Pradesh, it would be impossible to fulfil his lifelong aim of becoming the PM. It's no coincidence that the BJP then appointed Amit Shah to oversee the elections in Uttar Pradesh.

The party ended up winning 71 seats out of 80, while its ally Apna Dal got two. What surprised a few BJP supporters was the fact that just two years before that, in the 2012 assembly polls, the party had managed to get only a 15% vote share. But the Modi-Shah pair turned the tables on the SP and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), then considered the principal players in the state. There was a time in fact when the BJP, as well as the Congress, used to struggle for the third and the fourth spot in Uttar Pradesh.

The SP-BSP Alliance In 2019

The 2019 Lok Sabha elections further proved that the BJP had emerged as a formidable force and no political party had the firepower to defeat it alone. No wonder then that in 2019, the SP and the BSP, who had always been bitter foes, decided to bury their difference and join forces. They did manage to win 15 seats together, but the BJP still captured the lion's share, along with an enhanced vote share. From 42% votes in 2014, the party improved its tally to 49% by 2019. Since 2014, the BJP has successively won two assembly elections, both with a clear majority and with Yogi Adityanath as CM.

It is in this context that the alliance between the SP and the Congress assumes importance.

A Dwindling BSP

There is no denying the fact that though it was ultimately trounced by the BJP, the SP in the 2022 assembly polls had commanded an impressive 32% vote share, its best-ever performance. Akhilesh Yadav had tried to create a rainbow coalition with caste-based small political parties, though that coalition collapsed after the election.

BSP chief Mayawati, for some mysterious reason, seems to be in no mood to seriously contest elections in 2024. Her party's vote share has dropped drastically, and she has already announced that the BSP would fight alone. Mayawati's absence from the I.N.D.I.A alliance is advantageous to the BJP.

Yet, it would be erroneous to conclude that the SP-Congress alliance this time is no match for the BJP's might. The BJP, on its part, seems to understand this very well too.

Why The BJP Is Careful

The BJP's attempt to wean away the Jayant Chaudhary-led Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) from the I.N.D.I.A bloc underlines this. Despite the inauguration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, the party seems aware that it may be difficult to repeat its performance of the last two general elections in the state. The euphoria around the Ram Mandir inauguration, which came in January, seems to be on a decline already this month.

The BJP should also know that enthusiasm for the temple may not automatically reflect in the voting behaviour of people. The faith of devotees and their voting behaviour are two different things. One can feel grateful towards the BJP for the construction of the temple, but to be certain that people will vote for the BJP might be a mistake.

The BJP does not want to take chances either. Two incidents signify this argument. One, soon after the consecration, the BJP created a window for Nitish Kumar to return to the NDA - this was a party that had publicly said that its doors were shut for Nitish. Two, it announced the Bharat Ratna for the former chief minister of Bihar, Karpoori Thakur.

Similarly, the Modi government also announced a Bharat Ratna for former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh. Singh was a farmer leader with a massive following in the Jat community. His son Ajit Singh could not consolidate his father's legacy, and his grandson, Jayant Chaudhary, has also been reduced to leading a few Lok Sabha seats in western Uttar Pradesh through the RLD. Jayant Chaudhary and Akhilesh Yadav used to be on good terms and were considered inseparable, but that was only until the Bharat Ratna for Charan Singh. In western Uttar Pradesh, especially in Jat-dominated areas, where Muslims are also present in good numbers, the BJP might face stiff resistance in the upcoming elections.

The Farmers' Protests

Also, farmers are on the warpath again. Traditionally, the farmer's struggle, thanks to Mahendra Singh Tikait, has had a huge impact in this area. During the last agitation, the Modi government had to withdraw the three contentious farm laws. But the farmers' main demands remain unfulfilled. They have been demanding that a legal guarantee should be given for MSP (Minimum Support Price) for crops and that the Swaminathan Commission recommendations be honoured by the government. Two years back, the Modi government had set up a committee to study this, but even after over 35 sittings, no final decision has been taken.

If the current agitation continues, it will adversely impact the BJP's prospects in the area. Many may also not have forgotten the Lakhimpur Kheri incident in 2021, in which a few farmers were mowed down by the son of a central minister and the government failed to take any action. The million-dollar question, is, will Jayant prove to be handy for the BJP?

Modi's Popularity Intact, But There Are Challenges

Modi is the most popular leader in the country. His image as a Hindutva icon is still intact. He has also bolstered his status as a Prime Minister who is taking the country on a strong development path.

But it would be useful to remember that beyond the grand vision of winning 370 seats, 10 years of anti-incumbency against any government is no small matter, and no leader can afford to ignore it. There is unprecedented unemployment. Inflation is running high. The BJP government knows this well, and extending free ration to 81 crore people underlines its concern. In this context, the alliance of SP and the Congress might just have made the contest a bit more interesting.

Why Was Bumrah Rested Despite Wanting To Play All ENG Tests? Report Says...

Indian cricket team fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah wanted to play all five Test matches against England in the ongoing series but was rested for the fourth game in Ranchi as part of workload management, according to a report by Hindustan Times. The report claimed that Bumrah was keen on playing all the games "influenced by the two eight-day breaks at the end of the second and fourth matches". However, with the T20 World Cup taking place in June this year, the team management decided to rest him for the match.

Bumrah was not the only pacer who was rested in the series as Mohammed Siraj was released from the squad for the second Test despite travelling with the team and practicing in Visakhapatnam.

Bumrah was released from the Indian Test squad while senior batter KL Rahul was ruled out of the fourth match beginning in Ranchi on Friday.

Bumrah has been released as part of his workload management. He is the leading wicket-taker in the Test series with 17 scalps from three matches. He singlehandedly bowled India to victory in the second Test in Visakhapatnam.

Rahul had also missed the second and third Test after complaining of pain in his right quadriceps.

"Jasprit Bumrah has been released from the squad for the 4th IDFC First Bank Test against England in Ranchi. The decision was taken keeping in mind the duration of the series and amount of cricket he has played in recent times," the BCCI said in a statement.

"Meanwhile, KL Rahul is ruled out of the 4th Test. His participation in the final Test match in Dharamsala is subject to fitness," it added.

Pacer Mukesh Kumar, who was released from the squad for the third Test in Rajkot, has joined the team in Ranchi.

"Never My Intention...": Vikrant Apologises For Old Lord Ram-Sita Cartoon Tweet

Actor Vikrant Massey has found himself in the centre of a controversy after an old tweet shared by the actor went viral on social media once again. The 2018 tweet, made in connection to the gangrape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir, also included a cartoon featuring Lord Ram and Goddess Sita. This has led to fresh outrage among social media users. Apologising for the same, Vikrant Massey, on Wednesday, said, “In context to one of my Tweets way back in 2018, I'd like to say a few words: It was never my intention to hurt, malign or disrespect the Hindu community. But as I reflect in hindsight about a Tweet made in jest, I also release the distasteful nature of it. The same could have been said without adding the cartoon which was published in a newspaper.  And I'd with utmost humility like to apologise to each and everyone who has been hurt. As you all by now know, that I hold all faiths, beliefs and religions with the highest possible regard.  We all grow up with time and reflect upon our mistakes. This was mine. Regards”

The 2018 tweet by Vikrant Massey included an editorial cartoon which featured Goddess Sita telling Lord Ram, “I'm so glad I was kidnapped by Ravan and not by your bhakts!”  Along with the cartoon, Vikrant Massey had written on X [formerly Twitter]: “Half-baked potatoes and half-baked nationalists will only cause a pain in the gut. #KathuaCase #Unnao #Shame.” The tweet, which once again went viral on social media on Tuesday, has since been deleted.

The controversy comes just days after Vikrant Massey, in an interview, shared that he grew up in an inclusive household where his family members follow varied religions. On the show Unfiltered by Samdish Viran, the actor said, “My brother's name is Moeen, I am called Vikrant. You would wonder why the name Moeen. He converted to Islam, and my family let him change his religion. They said, ‘Beta, if you find satisfaction in this, go ahead…He converted at the age of 17, it is a big step. My mother is Sikhni, my father is a Church-going Christian, he goes to church twice a week. From a young age, I have seen a lot of arguments related to religion and spirituality.”

“My father was questioned by my extended relatives about how he could ‘allow' that [brother's conversion]. He said that was none of their business. ‘He is my son, he is only answerable to me and has all the rights to choose what he wants.' After seeing this, I went on my own quest, wondering what exactly is religion. It is man-made,” Vikrant Massey added.

On the work front, Vikrant Massey was last seen in the hugely successful 12th Fail that was released in 2023, and was a commercial and critical success.

Prince William Announces Plans To Build Homes For Homeless On His Estate

Britain's Prince Willaim has announced plans to build on his own land to tackle homelessness. According to the BBC, this project will provide 24 homes on the Duchy of Cornwall land - a private estate which, as per the official site, funds the public, charitable and private activities of the Prince of Wales and his family. The construction of the homes will begin in September and the first homes are due to be completed in autumn 2025.

According to the official statement, the homes will be built in partnership with homelessness charity St Petrocs. The first phase of the development will focus on "creating high-quality temporary accommodation that feels like home," as per the BBC. The statement also added that "wrap-around support" would be provided by St Petrocs to help residents access training and employment opportunities.

Ben Murphy, Duchy's estate director, said that homes would help "break the cycle of homelessness in the Newquay area". "As one of his key priorities for the Duchy of Cornwall, Prince William asked us to address the homelessness challenge within Cornwall and other areas where the estate resides," he said.

"The Duchy is well-known for integrating high quality affordable housing into the new communities built on its land, and Prince William is determined to ensure that we continue to be part of the solution when it comes to the housing crisis. The shortage of social rent and private rented properties are widely considered to be the main causes of increasing homelessness across the country, which is why we are proud to launch this project alongside ambitious plans to unlock more affordable and attainable homes across our estate," Mr Murphy added.

Separately, charity St Petrocs said it would help residents access training and employment "to provide a route out of homelessness for good".

"Our charity has been working in Cornwall for over 30 years and has supported many hundreds of people in this time. With the Duchy of Cornwall, we believe we can deliver a truly exemplary project embedded in the local community which will provide a route for many more people out of homelessness for good," the charity's chief executive said, as per the outlet.

Notably, the latest announcement by Prince William is part of his five-year campaign - announced in 2023 - to end homelessness.

Apart from the 24 homes, the Duchy of Cornwall also confirmed its future housing projects that would aim to increase affordable housing from 30% to 40%, meaning up to 200 more affordable homes will be built on top of the existing 1,020, the BBC reported. It also said it plans to create a Private Rented Scheme for Nansledan, which removes barriers to entry for those on lower incomes, provides longer-term tenancies and transparent rent increases.

Moreover, the estate committed to building more than 400 social rented homes and a further 475 affordable dwellings on its new development of South East Faversham in Kent.

Japan's 'Naked Men' Festival Succumbs To Population Ageing

A steam of sweat rose as hundreds of naked men tussled over a bag of wooden talismans, performing a dramatic end to a thousand-year-old ritual in Japan that took place for the last time.

Their passionate chants of "jasso, joyasa" (meaning "evil, be gone") echoed through a ceder forest of the northern Japan's Iwate region, where the secluded Kokuseki Temple has decided to end the popular annual rite.

Organising the event, which draws hundreds of participants and thousands of tourists every year, has become a heavy burden for the ageing local faithful, who find it hard to keep up with the rigours of the ritual.

The "Sominsai" festival, regarded as one of the strangest festivals in Japan, is the latest tradition impacted by the country's ageing population crisis that has hit rural communities hard.

"It is very difficult to organise a festival of this scale," said Daigo Fujinami, a resident monk of the temple that opened in 729.

"You can see what happened today --so many people are here and it's all exciting. But behind the scenes, there are many rituals and so much work that have to be done," he said.

"I cannot be blind to the difficult reality."

Ageing population

Japan's society has aged more rapidly than most other countries'. The trend has forced countless schools, shops and services to close, particularly in small or rural communities.

Kokuseki Temple's Sominsai festival used to take place from the seventh day of Lunar New Year through to the following morning.

But during the Covid pandemic, it was scaled down to prayer ceremonies and smaller rituals.

The final festival was a shortened version, ending around 11:00 pm, but it drew the biggest crowd in recent memory, local residents said.

As the sun set, men in white loincloths came to the mountainous temple, bathed in a creek and marched around temple's ground.

They clenched their fists against the chill of a winter breeze, all the while chanting "jasso joyasa".

Some held small cameras to record their experience, while dozens of television crews followed the men through the temple's stone steps and dirt pathways.

As the festival reached its climax, hundreds of men packed inside the wooden temple shouting, chanting and aggressively jostling over a bag of talismans.

Changing norms

Toshiaki Kikuchi, a local resident who claimed the talismans and who helped organise the festival for years, said he hoped the ritual will return in the future.

"Even under a different format, I hope to maintain this tradition," he said after the festival.

"There are many things that you can appreciate only if you take part."

Many participants and visitors voiced both sadness and understanding about the festival's ending.

"This is the last of this great festival that has lasted 1,000 years. I really wanted to participate in this festival," Yasuo Nishimura, 49, a caregiver from Osaka, told AFP.

Other temples across Japan continue to host similar festivals where men wear loincloths and bathe in freezing water or fight over talismans.

Some festivals are adjusting their rules in line with changing democraphics and social norms so that they can continue to exist -- such as letting women take part in previously male-only ceremonies.

From next year, Kokuseki Temple will replace the festival with prayer ceremonies and other ways to continue its spiritual practices.

"Japan is facing a falling birthrate, ageing population, and lack of young people to continue various things," Nishimura said.

"Perhaps it is difficult to continue the same way as in the past."

Here's Why Indian Players Are Sporting Black Armbands On Day 3 Of 3rd Test

Indian players wore black armbands in the memory of former captain Dattajirao Gaekwad on the third day of the ongoing third Test against England in Rajkot on Saturday. Dattajirao, who played 11 Tests for India between 1951 and 1962, died on February 13 after remaining hospitalised for 12 days. At 95, he was India's oldest living Test cricketer. Dattajirao was the father of former India batter and coach Aunshuman Gaekwad.

"Team India will be wearing black arm bands in memory of Dattajirao Gaekwad, former India captain and India's oldest Test cricketer who passed away recently," the BCCI said in a statement shortly before the third day's play got underway here at the Niranjan Shah Stadium.

A right-handed batter, who could bowl both medium pace and leg-break, Dattajirao was India's captain during the 1959 tour of England.

Meanwhile, India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Friday withdrew from the ongoing third Test against England as he flew back to Chennai to attend to his ill mother.

BCCI provided an update on the development but did not mention that the medical issue relates Ashwin's mother. However, BCCI President Rajeev Shukla posted on X that it's off-spinner's mother, who has fallen sick.

"Ravichandran Ashwin has withdrawn from the Test squad, effective immediately due to a family medical emergency. In these challenging times, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the team fully supports Ashwin," BCCI said in a media release.

"The BCCI extends its heartfelt support to the champion cricketer and his family. The health and well-being of the players and their loved ones are of utmost importance. The Board requests respect for the privacy of Ashwin and his family as they navigate through this challenging time," the statement added further.

UK Man Mixed His Own Sperm With Father's To Get Partner Pregnant

A man in England mixed his sperm with his father's to help get his partner pregnant as they couldn't afford IVF. According to The Guardian, the man has not been named for legal reasons, and is only identified as PQ in court documents. The outlet said that PQ and his partner JK had experienced fertility problems so he agreed to mix his sperm with his father's (RS), which was then injected into the woman. The arrangement, which the judge was informed had been "always intended" to be kept secret, led to the birth of a now five-year-old boy (named D in the court documents).

But once the local council was informed about the circumstances of the conception, it launched a legal bid to find the parentage of the child.

It approached the high court urging it to direct the man to carry out a DNA test to determine whether the man was D's father.

However, the judge dismissed the bid on Thursday, saying that he found the council had "no stake in the outcome".

"It may wish to know who is D's biological father, but it has no stake in the outcome of its application. A wish to uphold the public interest in maintaining accurate records of births does not confer a personal interest in the determination of such an application," the judge said in his order.

He concluded that the decision rests with the family - whether they want to undergo a paternity test to tell the child about his real father.

Sky News quoted the judge as saying that the family had "created a welfare minefield", adding: "I cannot believe that JK, PQ and (his father) RS properly thought through the ramifications of their scheme for JK to become pregnant, otherwise it is unlikely that they would have embarked upon it."

He said the man had an established father-and-son relationship with the child and it was up to him and the boy's mother to "manage the latent risks to his welfare".

Bali's Tourism Tax For Foreigners Comes Into Effect: Here's What To Know

Foreign tourists must now pay a $10 tax to enter Bali, one of the world's most popular tourist destinations. According to the BBC, the tourist tax, which was first announced last year, came into effect from Wednesday. The Indonesian government said that this move aims to preserve the culture and environment of the "Island of Gods". It applies to foreign tourists entering the province from abroad or other parts of the country. But domestic tourists, diplomatic visa holders and ASEAN nationals are exempted from the tax, officials said.

"This levy is aimed at the protection of the culture and the environment in Bali," Bali's acting governor Sang Made Mahendra Jaya said, as per AFP

The tax applies to all international travellers, regardless of their age and gender, including children. Tourists will have to pay the tax each time they arrive in Bali. The fee will have to be paid electronically via the "Love Bali" online portal and will apply to foreign tourists entering Bali from abroad or from other parts of Indonesia, the BBC reported.

Tourists who do not want to pay online can also pay at arrival points, such as airports and seaports through multiple payment methods, including credit cards, bank transfers, virtual accounts or QRIS, which is a QR code standard developed by Bank Indonesia and Indonesian Payment System Association for cashless payments in the nation.

Bali is known for its pristine beaches and beautiful landscapes. It is one of the most popular destinations among tourists. According to official data, almost 4.8 million tourists visited the province between January and November last year. The BBC reported that tourism also contributed some 60% to Bali's annual GPD before the pandemic.

Citing the province's statistics bureau, the outlet said that Australia was the largest contributor of foreign tourists to Bali in November 2023 with more than 100,000 arrivals. This was followed by tourists from India, China and Singapore.

However, misbehaving tourists in Bali have sparked outrage among locals in recent years. Last year, a Russian man was deported from Bali after stripping off at a sacred site. The same year, the Indonesian government also announced plans to ban foreign tourists from using motorbikes, after a spate of cases involving people breaking traffic laws. Last year, the local government also published an etiquette guide for tourists who wish to visit Bali.

Rohit Dismissed Twice In Nets As Local Bowler Uproots Middle Stump: Report

It has been a tough campaign for Rohit Sharma till now as the Indian cricket team skipper has struggled to score runs during the ongoing Test series against England. Rohit scored 24 and 39 in the first Test match where he got starts on both occasions but failed to convert them into big knocks. The numbers were worse in Visakhapatnam where he could manage to score 14 and 13 in the two innings. The India skipper has looked a bit hesitant in deciding how to approach his innings in Test cricket and according to a report by Indian Express, Rohit had a somewhat tough time during practice ahead of the third Test.

The report stated that Rohit found it difficult to handle a net bowler during the practice session in Rajkot and he was dismissed twice on consecutive deliveries. The first one was a sharp in-swinger that uprooted his middle stump and on the second occasion, he ended up nicking an out-swinging delivery.

With the exception of phenomenal knocks from Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul and Shubman Gill, the Indian batters have not looked quite convincing in the series till now. The situation will get tougher in the third Test where the team management is expected to pick an extremely inexperienced side.

With Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer missing out due to injuries, it is likely that both Sarfaraz Khan and Rajat Patidar will be added to the squad. With rumours suggesting that Dhruv Jurel can replace KS Bharat as the wicket-keeper, it is likely that the batters playing for India in the middle order can have a combined experience of just one Test with both Sarfaraz and Jurel making their debuts.

India will need to be ruthless and tactful in equal measure while dealing with an unpredictable England when the third chapter of a riveting Test series begins on Thursday.

After England shocked India in the series opener at Hyderabad, the hosts came back strong in Vizag to get on level footing, leaving the five-match series perfectly poised.

The brilliance of Yashasvi Jaiswal (321 runs) and Jasprit Bumrah (15) allowed India to make a comeback in the series but concerns remain over a misfiring middle-order, which will now be relying on the young talent to deliver the goods.

China's Maglev Train That "Levitates" Above Track Breaks Own Speed Record

The China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC) has claimed that its new magnetically levitated (maglev) train has surpassed its previous record of 623 kilometres per hour (387miles per hour) during tests in a low-vacuum tube just 2 km long. According to the South China Morning Post, while the exact speed reached by the train remains classified, the CASIC said that it had made "a significant breakthrough" with its latest test. It also added that it was the first time the ultra-fast hyperloop train achieved stable levitation while travelling in a low-vacuum tube.

This means that China could soon have a train that is as fast as a plane, the SCMP reported. The vehicle relies on maglev technology, which uses magnetism to propel the train forward, as well as "levitate" it above the tracks thereby reducing friction. To further boost its speed, the train also travels through a specifically designed low-vacuum tube that reduces air resistance.

The CASIC said that the latest test not only set a speed record for the system but also validated several key technologies and proved that they work well together. The high-speed flier project integrates aerospace and terrestrial rail transport technologies, with a designed speed of up to 1,000km/hr - surpassing commercial aviation speeds, the agency said.

"Science and technology progress step by step and some aspects of this project are still in uncharted territory in China. Every step is challenging, and it's a complex system," said the project's chief designer Mao Kai.

Also Read | Don't Underestimate The Pea! Tiny Brain Area May Be More Important Than Previously Thought: Study

According to the outlet, the latest test proved that the vehicle tube and track interact well, keeping the heavy maglev vehicles floating steadily. The powerful movement systems and overall safety controls also functioned as expected, the CASIC said.

These advances had improved the overall technical maturity of the system, laying a solid technical foundation for future higher-speed tests and the construction of a national level transport network, the agency added.

Additionally, the China National Space Administration, the CASIC department is also working on the country's next-generation commercial aerospace electromagnetic launch systems.

This Ayodhya Bank Has No Cash, Has Unique Requirement To Open Account

There is a unique bank here where money does not matter and the only return its 35,000 account-holders get is peace of mind, faith and spirituality! Catching the attention of devotees and tourists visiting the newly constructed Ram temple is "International Shree Sitaram Bank". The deposits here are booklets with "Sitaram" scribbled on all pages.

The spiritual bank, which was set up in November 1970 by Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, the chief of the Shri Ramjanmabhoomi Teertha Kshetra Trust, has over 35,000 account-holders in India and abroad including the US, the UK, Canada, Nepal, Fiji, the UAE and other countries.

The bank has a collection of 20,000 crore 'Sitaram' booklets from the devotees of Lord Ram.

According to Punit Ram Das Maharaj, the manager of the bank, the number of daily visitors at the bank has increased after the consecration ceremony of the grand temple last month.

"The bank provides free booklets and red pens to devotees and keeps track of each account. One has to write 'Sitaram' at least 5 lakh times to get an account opened in the bank and then a passbook is issued.

"There are 136 branches of the bank across India and even abroad. The account holders also send us the booklets by post and we maintain the ledger here," Puneet Ram Das told PTI.

He said the visitors also question the benefits of writing Sitaram and depositing it into bank.

"I tell them that the way we visit temples of gods and goddesses for inner peace, faith and virtue, in the same way, writing 'Sitaram' and depositing the same into the bank is a form of a prayer. Don't we say that God has his own account of everyone's good and bad deeds? This is something similar.

"The devotees find solace and profound spiritual enrichment in writing, chanting and reminiscing Lord Ram's name," he added.

Puneet Ram Das explained that it is believed that by writing the name 84 lakh times, one can attain 'Moksha'.

Jeetu Nagar, from Gaya in Bihar, who has been visiting the bank for 14 years, said this is his only form of prayers.

"Instead of praying at a temple, I practise this and it has always worked for me whenever I have felt low or have been in trouble. I write it throughout the year and deposit at the bank once a year. There is an option to send by post too, but I prefer to visit myself," he said.

Nagar said he has already deposited booklets with a name count of 1.37 crore.

Suman Das, another account holder from Bareily in Uttar Pradesh said, said he has written 'Sitaram' 25 lakh times.

"When I told my neighbour about the bank, he thought I must be crazy but I have strong belief. Whenever I do the writing, I feel my prayers are being heard," he said.

A new idol of Lord Ram was consecrated at the grand temple in a consecration ceremony on January 22 led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Lakhs of people watched the "pran pratishtha (consecration)" ceremony on television in their homes and neighbourhood temples, becoming part of the historic event held just months before the Lok Sabha elections.

R Ashwin Reacts As Jasprit Bumrah Replaces Him As No. 1 Test Bowler

Indian spin veteran Ravichandran Ashwin hailed speedster Jasprit Bumrah for his performance during the second Test against England, saying that the real "show stealer" in the match was "Boomball". England had taken a 1-0 lead by beating India by 28 runs in the first Test at Hyderabad, but Bumrah's 'Boomball', his pin-point yorkers and his ability to put batters under pressure put England's highly-attacking, positive and result-oriented "Bazball" approach in check during the second Test at Visakhapatnam, which India won by 106 runs. Bumrah was given the 'Player of the Match' award for taking nine wickets, including a six-wicket haul in the first innings. After the match, Bumrah soon toppled Ashwin to become the world's number-one Test bowler.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said that Bumrah bowled extraordinarily and termed his climb towards number one as a "Himalayan feat".

"The real show stealer was BoomBall. Jasprit Bumrah has bowled extraordinarily. He is the leading wicket-taker with 14 wickets and also the number-one-ranked Test bowler. I am a huge fan of his and this is a Himalayan feat," said Ashwin.

The spinner also lauded young batter Shubman Gill, who finally managed to get a fifty-plus score after 12 Test innings when he scored a century in the second Test. Ashwin said that Gill's talent is undeniable and the century justified to his critics the armour he has as a batter.

"There is no doubt about the amount of talent that Shubman Gill has. But the hundred justified just the kind of armour he had as a batter," Ashwin said.

Ashwin recalled that the match was evenly poised on day four, but the team's "extraordinary vibe, energy and performance" helped them win. The veteran, just a wicket away from 500 Test wickets, compared the excitement of this series to England's historic Ashes series at home against Australia in 2005, which they won.

"We came into the fourth day with it all being even-stevens. But our extraordinary vibe, energy and team performance helped us level the series 1-1. England played an exciting Ashes series against Australia in 2005 and I followed that with great interest. I am getting a similar feeling of excitement about this series as well," said Ashwin.

The third Test is set to start from February 15 onwards from Rajkot, which is the home of veteran middle-order batter Cheteshwar Pujara, said Ashwin. Ashwin quipped that the team should wait and watch if Pujara invites them home for dinner.

"A certified Indian legend who recently concluded his 100 Test matches. We'll be playing in his place. Ravindra Jadeja, Saurashtra. The Rajkot stadium is his home ground, but he is from Jamnagar. Let us wait and watch if Cheteshwar Pujara invites everyone to his home for dinner," Ashwin concluded.

Notably, in the ongoing Ranji Trophy, Pujara has been piling up runs. The out-of-favour batter has scored 648 runs in six matches at an average of 81.00 in nine innings. He has scored two centuries and two fifties. His best score is 243. He is the third-highest run-getter in the tournament.

Who Is Jack Sweeney, The Jet Tracker Who Angers Taylor Swift, Elon Musk

Pop sensation Taylor Swift's attorneys have threatened legal action against Jack Sweeney, a student who tracks private jets of celebrities, including that of the Blank Space hitmaker.

As per a report by The Guardian, Ms Swift's lawyers have sent a cease-and-desist letter to Mr Sweeney.

Back in December last year, Taylor Swift's attorney accused Mr Sweeney of engaging in "stalking and harassing behaviours" over his tracking of the American singer's jet activity.

The report quoted attorney Katie Wright Morrone's letter as saying, “While this may be a game to you, or an avenue that you hope will earn you wealth or fame, it is a life-or-death matter for our Client.”

The letter added that there was "no legitimate interest in or public need for this information, other than to stalk, harass, and exert dominion and control".

Who Is Jack Sweeney

Jack Sweeney is a university student from Florida, United States. The 21-year-old runs several social media accounts tracking the private jet use of Taylor Swift and other celebrities. As per BBC, Mr Sweeney is the son of an airline maintenance operations controller and a teacher.

Mr Sweeney, who grew up in the suburbs of Orlando, is the same person who famously caught Elon Musk's attention for tracking his jet travels online.

Reportedly, he uses publicly available data from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and broadcasts aircraft signals to track public figures' jet use and measure their carbon footprints.

Meanwhile, Taylor Swift's attorney has said that if Mr Sweeney continues to publish information tracking her jet travels, “she will have no choice but to pursue any legal remedies available to her".

According to a report by CNN, the letter by Ms Morrone accuses Mr Sweeney of disregarding the public safety of others "in exchange for public attention and/or requests for financial gain".

The letter even references Elon Musk offering Mr Sweeney $5,000 to delete the Twitter account tracking his jet.

Responding to this letter, the 21-year-old has said he never intended any harm with his actions, noting that he is compiling "public information".

He added, "I actually think Swift has some good songs," the college student said. "I believe in transparency and public information.”

'India Don't Miss Bumrah': Dale Steyn's Blockbuster Take On India Star

Star pacer Jasprit Bumrah led India's charge with the ball in the second Test against England, taking a combined nine wickets as the hosts levelled the five-match series. Bumrah sparked an England batting collapse in the first innings, claiming first innings to hand India a healthy lead. In the second innings, he struck three more times on a non-responsive pitch as India wrapped up the proceedings inside four days. Bumrah's brilliance saw him become the first Indian pacer to reach the pinnacle of the Test rankings.

With the third Test set to begin on Thursday, there's has been a lot of chatter regarding Bumrah's workload. Reports had earlier suggested that Bumrah might miss the game in Rajkot. However, the BCCI confirmed on Saturday that Bumrah will be part of the squad for the match.

However, former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn feels India don't really miss Bumrah as the step-in bowlers are capable enough to do the job.

"Being an Indian player, there's going to be a lot of workload. There's a lot of cricket that India plays, they're one of the highly-sought after teams in the world. It seems like India don't really miss him (Bumrah) because the step-in bowlers are up to the standard, and it's a great credit to Indian cricket," Steyn told the media ahead of the SA20 final.

For the unversed, India played Mohammed Siraj in the first Test while Mukesh Kumar got the nod ahead of him in the second Test to partner Bumrah. However, both Siraj and Mukesh failed to trouble the English batters, whereas Bumrah was the star of the show.

But, Steyn, who is the bowling coach of SunRisers Eastern Cape, summed up Bumrah's brilliance by claiming that he is someone who doesn't rely on pace-friendly tracks.

"All round he's a fantastic bowler. And it's no surprise with his skiddy kind of action that he's got that. He takes wickets on those docile pitches, so he's fantastic. I don't think there's any Test bowlers right now who are able to run in and bowl essentially wicket-taking yorkers. To take wickets in Test matches, there are probably a handful of guys who could do that. Trent Boult was one of that, Mitchell Starc maybe. And obviously, Bumrah," he added

"I remember saying ages back that a good yorker bowled in India or South Africa or Australia remains a good yorker because you take the surface out of it, doesn't matter where you bowled it. You take the pitch away and I think that's one thing that he's done really well."

Video: Woman Abruptly Opened Cab Door On Busy Road. This Happened Next

A shocking video shared on X (formerly Twitter) serves as a perfect reminder of why it's so important to look before opening the door of your car in the middle of the road. The clip, shared by X user @3rdEyeDude, showed a woman abruptly opening the door of a car on a busy road and an autorickshaw crashing into it. The incident took place in Karnataka on Wednesday afternoon. It was captured on the dashboard camera of another vehicle.

The clip showed a woman abruptly opening the door of a cab in the middle of traffic, causing an incoming autorickshaw to ram into it. After the accident, the woman tried to close the damaged door of the vehicle as if nothing happened. The three-wheeler, on the other hand, immediately stopped to check the damage, while the woman swiftly walked away from the scene without admitting or apologising for her mistake.

"Passenger on a cab opens car door in the middle of the road, causing an auto to ram into it. Despite the collision, she calmly walks away as if nothing happened. This was caught on dashcam footage," the X user wrote while sharing the video.

Watch the clip below:

Since being shared, the video has amassed more than 90,000 views. In the comments section, users blamed both, the cab driver and the woman, for the accident. While some said that the driver should have warned the passenger before she opened the door, others simply blamed the woman for her careless act.

"Lol that Door is gone! Needs a lot of repair. I would say it's taxi drivers fault. Car Drivers should never encourage passengers to get off from the right side. One should always park the vehicle by left side of the road and ask passengers to alight from left door," wrote one user. "Cabbie should have warned passenger about overtaking traffic, before brainless woman opened the door," commented another.

"It is hilarious to see the lady trying to close the damaged car door as if nothing has happened and after making a second attempt, she just walked away as if 'these car doors are like this only'!!!" a third user said.

"Primarily the passenger's fault. But as a safe driver, auto driver also needed to ensure that distance JUST IN CASE if the cab gate opens. Not trying to brag, but driving is all about ensure such JUST IN CASE scenarios, especially in a country like ours," expressed a fourth.

EasyJet Flight Came Close To Crashing Into Swiss Lake, Probe Finds

An investigation has been ordered after an EasyJet flight descended well below the glide path while approaching Geneva airport. According to Edinburgh News, the flight was on its way to Switzerland from Edinburgh. An interim report by Swiss investigators said that the plane dropped to a dangerously low altitude, nearly crashing into Lake Geneva, the outlet further said. The plane had 157 passengers on board and was just 750 feet above the surface of the water while still 7.5 miles (12 kilometres) from the runway.

The incident took place in November last year and the plane involved was an Airbus A320 Neo. The investigation report was released this week.

The Swiss Safety Investigation Board (SUST) said that the plane should have been three times higher at that point in its descent.

"During the approach to runway 22, the aircraft descended significantly below the glideslope and the flight crew initiated a go-around," the Swiss Safety Investigation Service (SESE) said.

The pilots were alerted by the air traffic controllers who urged them to "check your altitude immediately". The pilots then accelerated rapidly and looped over the French commune of Thonoe-les-Bains. They were placed on leave after the incident, but have since resumed duties, according to Edinburgh News.

A reason for the near-miss has not yet been specified with a full report still to come from Swiss authorities, it further said.

An EasyJet spokeswoman said: "We are fully supporting the investigation in line with procedures. At no point was the safety of those onboard compromised. The safety and wellbeing of passengers and crew is always easyJet's highest priority."

''Would Retail In Mumbai For... '': Capitalmind CEO On Amazon Foldable Home

A TikTok user in the United States recently bought a foldable house on Amazon worth $26,000 (Rs 21.3 lakh), following which videos of such homes have been cropping up on social media. Notably, several people in the US have been buying such tiny homes online, as an alternative to rising rents and sky-high house deposits.

The new-age homes have sparked a debate on social media, with some people calling it a ''waste of money'', while others loved the idea of purchasing it. One X user called it a ''glorified shipping container.'' On Tuesday, Capitalmind CEO Deepak Shenoy too dived into the debate and imagined what would happen if these houses were being sold in Mumbai, a city known for its high real estate prices.

''This would retail in Mumbai for at least 5 crores each and you still won't be allowed to cook non-veg in them,'' he wrote, taking a dig at the foldable house. Notably, Mumbai is a major economic center in India and attracts a large number of people for work and business, leading to a high demand for housing.

Here is the post:

Mr. Shenoy's quip led users from India to further speculate about the future of such houses in Mumbai, where there is a shortage of land. Meanwhile, some people were still trying to wrap their heads around the unusual concept.

One user wrote, ''Nah much more. U first need land to place it. Show me that first. Maybe 5 crores if you can have it stacked to 10 levels.''

Another commented, ''I thought it is some kind of joke. But it is really a pre-fabricated house in different sizes.''

A third wrote, ''Where would you put it though. Cost of land has to be factored in.'' A fourth added, ''The land to keep these containers will cost in crores in Mumbai.'' A fifth said, ''And let's not forget how flooded these would get every single monsoon.''

According to Metro, the house is a fold-out flat measuring 16.5ft by 20ft, worth $26,000 (Rs 21,37,416). The tiny flat comes with a built-in shower and toilet, a kitchenette, a living area, and a bedroom.

Hyundai Said To Be Considering One Of India's Biggest Ever IPOs

Hyundai Motor Co. is considering an initial public offering for its India unit that may raise about $2.5 billion, according to people familiar with the matter, potentially making it one of the biggest listings ever in the South Asian country.

Hyundai has held talks with international banks about the possible IPO, the people said, asking not to be identified discussing confidential information. The company may reach out to domestic advisers for pitches soon, one of the people said. A listing may value the Indian unit at $25 billion, the people said.

Considerations are at a very early stage and a share sale may not go ahead, the people said.

A representative for Hyundai Motor India Ltd. declined to comment and the parent company didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

If an IPO does proceed, Hyundai will use the cash raised to expand operations, one of the people said. India is a key market that accounted for 13% of Hyundai's global sales last year and the South Korean firm is the country's second-biggest carmaker.

Shares of Hyundai's component suppliers in India rallied Tuesday following news of the possible IPO, first reported by the Economic Times, which said the company was exploring raising $3.3 billion to $5.6 billion.

About $27 billion was raised in IPOs and follow-on share sales in India last year, exceeding Hong Kong for the first time in at least three decades, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. India's benchmark Sensex index has risen for the past eight years in a row, including a 19% advance in 2023.
