Netanyahu, Israeli Officials Face Potential Arrest Warrants By World Court

Israel is voicing concern that the International Criminal Court could be preparing to issue arrest warrants for government officials on charges related to the conduct of its war against Hamas.

The ICC - which can charge individuals with war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide - is investigating Hamas' October 7 cross-border attack and Israel's devastating military assault on Hamas-ruled Gaza, now in its seventh month.

In response to Israeli media reports that the ICC might soon issue arrest warrants for senior Israeli government and military officials, Foreign Minister Israel Katz on Sunday warned Israeli embassies to bolster their security because of the risk of a "wave of severe antisemitism".

"We expect the court (ICC) to refrain from issuing arrest warrants against senior Israeli political and security officials," Katz said. "We will not bow our heads or be deterred and will continue to fight."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Friday that any ICC decisions would not affect Israel's actions but would set a dangerous precedent.

Israeli officials are worried that the court could issue arrest warrants against Netanyahu and other top officials for alleged violations of international humanitarian law in Gaza, Israeli media have reported.

They said the ICC is also considering arrest warrants for leaders from Hamas.

The ICC, based in The Hague, and Hamas, Gaza's ruling group, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Israel is not a member of the court and does not recognise its jurisdiction, but the Palestinian territories were admitted with the status of a member state in 2015.

In October, ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan said the court had jurisdiction over any potential war crimes committed by Hamas fighters in Israel and by Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip.

Khan has said his team is actively investigating any crimes allegedly committed in Gaza and that those who are in breach of the law will be held accountable.

"The ICC is an independent organization and their efforts are being undertaken without any contact or interference by the U.S.," U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Linda Thomas-Greenfield told reporters on Monday.

The U.S. - Israel's ally - is also not a member of the court. A White House spokesperson said later on Monday: "The ICC has no jurisdiction in this situation, and we do not support its investigation."

INTERNATIONAL ISOLATION

Matthew Gillet, a lecturer in international law at the University of Essex in England, said anyone issued with an arrest warrant would be unable to travel to the more than 120 countries that are members of the ICC, including most European countries, Japan and Australia, or they could be detained.

Gillet said if arrest warrants were issued against Israeli officials, some allied countries could take action such as reducing weapons transfers or scaling back diplomatic visits, increasing Israel's international isolation.

It would make "it more difficult for Western liberal democracies to engage with Israel," he said.

On October 7, Hamas led an attack on Israeli military bases and communities in which 1,200 people were killed, mostly civilians, and 253 were taken as hostages, according to Israeli tallies.

Israel has since launched a ground, air and sea offensive that has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza authorities, and has laid much of the small, densely populated coastal territory to waste.

The Gaza Health Ministry does not distinguish between combatants and non-combatants in its casualty reports but most of the fatalities have been civilians, health officials say.

Israel says that it takes precautions to minimise civilian deaths and that at least a third of the Gaza fatalities are combatants, figures that Hamas has dismissed.

Israel's military campaign has displaced most of the blockaded Palestinian enclave's 2.3 million people and created a humanitarian crisis.

The case at the ICC is separate from a genocide case launched against Israel at the International Court of Justice, also based in The Hague.

The ICJ, also known as the World Court, is a United Nations court that deals with disputes between states, while the ICC is a treaty-based criminal court focusing on individual criminal responsibility for war crimes.

Virender Sehwag Lambasts R Ashwin, Says He "Won't Find A Place In My Team"

Former India batter Virender Sehwag has raised concerns over veteran spin-bowling all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin's form in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Ashwin has struggled to pick wickets in IPL 2024, managing just two scalps in eight matches, and has also leaked over nine runs per over. Despite his struggles, Ashwin recently claimed that taking wickets in T20s is irrelevant. Reacting to his remark, Sehwag slammed Ashwin and said that the veteran might go unsold in the auction next season.

"This is the same as when KL Rahul had said that the strike rate doesn't matter. Same thing. He said it for batting, Ashwin has said it for bowling that it doesn't matter if you get the wickets. If his stats aren't good, then he may not even get picked in the auction next year. When you pick a bowler, do you expect him to give away 25-30 runs or do you expect him to give you wickets and become man of the match twice or thrice?" Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.

Slamming Ashwin for his mindset, Sehwag pointed out how his peers -- Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav -- have been picking at regular intervals.

"All his competitors - Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav or anyone else - are getting the wickets. He thinks if he bowls off spin then anyone will hit him. Which is why he bowls his carrom bowl, which is why he is not getting any wickets. Maybe if he believes in his off spin or doosra, he can bag more wickets. But that's his mindset. But if I were a mentor or a coach of a franchise, I wouldn't think like that. If my bowler is thinking about saving runs and not taking wickets, he won't find a place in the team," he added.

Despite Ashwin's poor form, his franchise RR sit top of the IPL 2024 points table with 16 points from nine matches.

RR need a win in their next game, against SunRisers Hyderabad, to qualify for the playoffs.

Man Sits On Chair, Parks Bike In Middle Of Delhi Road For Reel, Arrested

A Delhi man was arrested after he was seen sitting on a busy GT Karnal road, to make a reel for his social media account. Delhi Police took decisive action against the 26-year-old accused identified as Vipin Kumar, resulting in his arrest and prosecution.

The viral video shows a parked motorcycle and a chair placed in the middle of the road. The person then sits on the chair in a filmy manner. Taking cognisance of the viral video, Delhi police arrested the accused man.

"Delhi police registered a case under various sections of the Motor Vehicles Act and IPC against the man making reels by parking a motorcycle in the middle of GT Road and seizing the motorcycle and mobile phone. The process of deleting Instagram account is underway," Delhi Police wrote on X.

See the post here:

Reacting to the reports of the arrest of the content creator, some social media users demanded that he should be heavily fined.

A user wrote, "I don't know under what sections, he should pay in lakhs as a fine and the community service."

"These are all woke. @DelhiPolice did the right thing by arresting him," another user commented.

"Thank you for the enforcement of the law. Just to make reels, people inconvenience others and take huge risks," the third user wrote.

"Removing the social media account should be the standard practice for all such people, because a mere challan may not hurt them as much as the loss of that social media acct will, but it should be done with each defaulter without exception," the fourth user commented.

"Good job and quick action," the fifth user wrote.

The stringent police response follows a recent incident where two individuals, including a woman, were arrested and fined for filming reels on the road while dressed in superhero costumes.

Pune Man Quits "Toxic" Job, Dances To Dhol Beats In Front Of Ex Boss

A Pune man recently said goodbye to his allegedly toxic workplace, and it was no ordinary farewell. Aniket, a sales associate, summoned musicians to his office and danced to the beats of dhol while his boss looked on. This not-so-usual departure from the company was posted online by popular content creator Anish Bhagat.

“I think a lot of you are going to relate to this. Toxic work culture is so prominent these days. Lack of respect and entitlement is quite common,” the creator claimed.

Mr Bhagat claimed that Aniket left his job of three years due to a "very toxic" work environment. In a video shared on Instagram, Aniket said that his raise was in “peanuts” and there was no respect from his boss. He said he felt stuck because he was “from a middle-class family.”

To make Aniket's exit memorable, Mr Bhagat, along with Aniket's friends, organised a surprise party outside his office on his last day. They brought in dhols and waited for his manager to come out. As soon as he did, Aniket shook his hand, and said, “Sorry sir, bye-bye”. Next, he was dancing to the beats of the dhol. His manager, visibly annoyed, tried to stop the filming.

Mr Bhagat narrated that the manager “got super pissed” and “started pushing people,” adding, “Now I know why (Aniket) quit.”

Later, the group visited a temple, and in the evening, Mr Bhagat and Aniket's friends threw him a surprise party, presenting him with a cake and posters that read, "aatma nirbhar bharat" (self-reliant India). Mr Bhagat revealed that Aniket would now pursue his passion of becoming a fitness trainer and gifted him some gym shoes. “Aniket is ready to begin with his next step. I hope this story inspires people. If you're looking for a trainer, you can reach out to @aniketrandhir_1718,” Mr Bhagat wrote.

In a 2023 report by Harappa Insights, toxic bosses and toxic workplace environments were cited as major factors in employees quitting their jobs. The report found that 58 per cent of employees quit their jobs because of toxic bosses, while 54 per cent left due to toxic workplace environments.

SRH Coach's Blunt Take On Anchors In T20s Amid Kohli Strike-Rate Debate

Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Daniel Vettori feels that after mastering the art of setting totals, it's time his team brushes up on its chasing abilities as the business end of the Indian Premier League approaches. SRH are currently third in the leaderboard with five wins from eight games. Of the five victories, four have come batting first. "We have been successful setting totals and now we have to look at how well we are in chasing," Vettori said after the 35-run loss against Royal Challengers Bengaluru here on Thursday night.

RCB posted a challenging 206 for 7 after opting to bat and then restricted SRH to 171 for 8.

For a team that has breached the 250-run mark thrice this season, the target was easily gettable but a rare failure of the top and middle-order cost the hosts dearly.

"Obviously, disappointing one where we have come from in the last four games; we played some really good cricket and even though we lost, you could see if we had some wickets at the back end, we could have still chased it down," Vettori said at the post-match press conference.

"Those early wickets broke everything. We were confident for the scores we were being able to put up. We though that 206 was a good score, we probably let a few runs in the field. But there was confidence in the group because of past performances.

"We also knew it was being set up by the openers and how good they have played, and today they had an off day and that's cricket," he said.

The former New Zealand cricketer said there are no easy games in IPL.

"Unfortunately, we didn't get the support through the middle stages. It's a tough loss but we understand every team in the IPL can beat every team. There are no easy games at all," Vettori said.

The coach was of the view that the role of an anchor has no significance in high-scoring matches.

"I think the wicket was still pretty good. The guys who came off said that it is a surface where you can score on. Anchor role when you are chasing 207 it is hard to come, you obviously need to be aggressive. For some to sit along and play anchor role is a little bit tricky." RCB all-rounder Swapnil Singh, meanwhile, was relieved after his side snapped its six-match losing streak.

"Experience was good but we won the game that was more important. When you win a game, the tempo in the team changes. It feels good. Last two games we missed by small difference but still long way to go," he said.

Swapnil said they felt the target was enough on this wicket despite SRH boasting of a super-aggressive batting order.

"The ball was stopping. Our main aim was to spin the ball and bowl slower as a fast bowler. It helped, we knew that they will come hard at us and obviously they did.

"Yes, we felt so because the wicket was stopping when we were batting as well and dew was not there," he said.

Pups Carlos, Charles, Lando Join Chennai Police Canine Squad

The Greater Chennai's city police canine squad has recently expanded its ranks with the addition of three Belgian shepherd puppies. City Police Commissioner Sandeep Rai Rathore has named the trio 'Charles,' 'Lando,' and 'Carlos', after Formula 1 drivers.

Mr Rathore said that the new puppies will be given special training to work in coordination with police, ensuring the continued success of the sniffer dog squad in maintaining public safety, the TOI reported.

Meanwhile, the choice of names for the pups has piqued the interest of people, who are now speculating whether the Commissioner is an F1 enthusiast.

A user wrote on X, formerly Twitter, “Looks like he is a fan of F1 drivers Carlos Sainz, Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris.”

“All F1 first names!” someone exclaimed.

Another wrote, “Someone follows #F1,” followed by a winking emoji.

“Bro is an F1 fan,” commented a fourth.

The sniffer dog squad of the Greater Chennai Police plays a key role in helping law enforcement across various cases, including murder, robbery, bomb detection, and drug detection. These highly trained dogs, operating under the supervision of sub-inspectors of police from Kilpauk and St Thomas Mount, use their keen sense of smell to identify evidence and potential threats, often leading to arrests of criminals.

The Chennai police sniffer dog squad consists of 21 trained dogs (not including the three puppies), each specialising in different areas. "Fourteen dogs specialise in bomb detection, ensuring quick and accurate identification of potential threats. Six dogs are used for crime detection, and one dog is utilised for drug detection," a police officer told TOI. Five dogs have retired from their service and are currently being cared for at the dog kennel in Madhavaram.

Vidya Malavade added, “I remember Mukesh Chabbra's team was casting and he's like do you have any photos like the character they want so I can show it to the team and show. And I sent pictures. "Such A Player Of No Use": Sehwag Launches Scathing Attack At IPL Star

Punjab Kings continue to reel among the bottom sides of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 after losing yet another contest, to last year's runners-up Gujarat Titans on Sunday. With primary skipper Shikhar Dhawan absent, Sam Curran took over the reins and promoted him at the top of the batting order. But the English all-rounder barely managed to click, scoring just 20 runs from 19 balls. Even with the ball Curran couldn't do much, leaking 18 runs in 2 overs as Gujarat Titans chased down the target of 143 runs with ease.

Reflecting on Curran's performances for PBKS, former India and Punjab Kings batter Virender Sehwag heavily criticized the English all-rounder. Sehwag, in his unfiltered criticism, said that he wouldn't have Curran in his team at all.

"I wouldn't keep Sam Curran as a batting all-rounder or a bowling all-rounder. Because such a player is of no use, who does some batting and some bowling. Either you win the game with your batting or win the game with your bowling. Either you hit the bullseye or you don't perform at all," said Sehwag on Cricbuzz.

Punjab Kings have struggled almost the entire campaign so far, be it with respect to their bowling unit or batting. After the defeat against Gujarat, Curran admitted that his side now has to win every game remaining in order to go through to the playoffs.

"I think so (we were 10-15 short). The effort with the ball was incredible, the commitment and fight was amazing, but it was not enough. The Afghanistan spinners are world class bowlers and Sai Kishore bowled really well, credit to them. That is the third time we have used that pitch, anything above 160 would have been a par total but we still fought well. Prabhsimran played really well in the powerplay but unfortunately we lost a cluster of wickets after that. Now we know what to do, we have to win every game," he said after the match.

In Anand Mahindra's Exceptional Post For "AI" Gukesh D, A Lesson For All

India achieved an all new high in chess on Monday morning as Gukesh D became the youngest player in the world to win Candidates tournament. Gukesh, at the age of 17, made history while also booking a spot in the final of the world championship. As entire India celebrates Gukesh's triumph, industrialist Anand Mahindra gave an exceptional 'Artificial Intelligence' praise for the teenage chess prodigy. In his post on social media, Mr. Mahindra also highlighted how the renowned Magnus Carlsen got his prediction wrong when it comes to the Candidates tournament.

Sharing Carlsen's pre-tournament, prediction, Mr. Mahindra highlighted that the Norwegian expected Gukesh to do poorly in the tournament but the Indian went on to win the competition. While admitting that Carlsen's prediction might have been right before the tournament began, it's how Gukesh continued to learn as he progressed, that made him a winner.

Anand Mahindra's post on X (formerly Twitter). Read: "This was Magnus Carlsen's prediction for the #candidates2024

"Perhaps Magnus wasn't grossly wrong-at the point when he made the prediction. What this shows, I think, is the incredible speed at which Gukesh is evolving. By the time he plays Ding Liren, he will have evolved further... There's nothing artificial about Gukesh's intelligence, but AI is essentially a learning machine and so is Gukesh! Keep learning-no matter what your age.

"There could be no other source of #MondayMotivation than @DGukesh".

With this triumph, Gukesh will challenge the reigning World Champion Ding Liren of China in the World Chess Championship match. He is now the second Indian after Vishwanathan Anand to fight for the Classical World Championship title.

Anand won the title five times between 2000 and 2013 when he lost to challenger Magnus Carlsen, who has currently abdicated his crown and refused to participate in the Candidates 2024.

The World Championship Match consists of 14 games. The player who scores 7.5 points or more wins the match, and no further games are played. If the score after 14 games is equal, the winner is decided on a tiebreak.

CA's Viral Post On Salary Comparison With IAS Officer Sparks Debate

Becoming an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer is one of the most prestigious and sought-after careers in India. However, a chartered accountant (CA) sparked a debate on X when he said he didn't understand why people chose the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) despite the low salary.

CA Chirag Chauhan compared the salary of an IAS officer with his profession, noting that the average salary of an IAS is the starting salary of a CA. He also shared a photo showing an IAS officer's salary division.

''The average salary of an IAS is the starting salary of a CA Why do people prefer IAS?'' he wrote.

See the post here:

His tweet has gone viral, garnering an array of reactions. Some users said that people prefer IAS not because of the money, but the ''respect and power'' the position brings.

One user wrote, ''Have you ever heard of an IAS ever reporting to a CA? Ever!? (Unless the CA is a senior govt employee or a minister).'' Another commented, ''Power and respect. Rewards are bigger than money. Also, a lot of your expenses are taken care of for life.''

A third wrote, ''There is no comparison with any profession. Total seats of IAS in India are less than total no of CA's qualify every attempt. Every year only 180 IAS are selected in India. IAS cadre seats are based on the population and size of the state. CA is one of the best post-qualification course for higher studies. People make their career in the area in which they wish to make according to their strength & ability. There are almost 2 crore students who clear class 12th every year and they choose their career in any field. No relation to salary, it depends upon the passion, knowledge & focus on anything we wish to do.''

A fourth added, ''People wanting to join IAS are not motivated by money they are motivated by desire to serve people.'' A fifth wrote, ''When you started as CA did you start your career in manegerial position, did your office lend you a car and free petrol, driver, servant, house(TBH bungalow) in prominent area!??''

Bowlers Intimidated, Crowd Loud: On Dhoni Storm In Lucknow, Rahul Says This

Lucknow Super Giants skipper KL Rahul was chuffed to get most of his decisions right as he guided his team to a convincing eight-wicket win over defending champions Chennai Super Kings in an IPL game on Friday. Rahul had a good day in office as he was spot-on with his bowling changes and also took two catches and affected a stumping before returning to smash a match-winning 53-ball 82 to boot with. "Feels good at the end of the day, When you win, looks like you make all the decisions right," said Rahul, who was adjudged the Player of the Match, during the post-match presentation.

"Impossible to get all right. Depends on the kind of wicket we are playing on and the kind of batters there are. We spend time doing homework on tactics and strategy and we spoke about them not settling against one style of bowling."

LSG had kept things under control before Moeen Ali (30 off 20) and MS Dhoni (28 off 9) went on a six-hitting spree to take CSK to a fighting 176 for six.

"Halfway stage, I would have been happy with 160. Felt the wicket was slow, a bit of grip but not too much. 160-165 would have been ideal.

"But MSD walks in and the bowlers feel intimidated. He walks in and bowlers were under pressure, the crowd was really loud, he has done it in the past."

Chasing 177, Rahul (82) and De Kock (54) batted with authority during their match-winning alliance of 134, the highest partnership for any wicket at the Ekana Stadium, as LSG scored 180 for 2 in 19 overs.

"Felt that if we bat well, we could chase it down. I have been trying to assess the situation and today it came off. With Chennai's spinners, they tried to put brakes on us," he said.

"We tried to get to a good start. Tried to take them down, luckily it came off. When your partnership goes on, you can take a few more chances. Glad that it happened." Ruturaj Gaikwad, the CSK captain, said his team was 10-15 runs short with dew coming in.

"We finished off very well, couldn't have asked for more. But after powerplay, we couldn't kick on till 14-15th over. We lost wickets regularly and were 10-15 short.

"Slightly difficult to bat but with Impact Player rule you need an extra batter. With dew coming on later, felt 180-190 could have been good."

CSK bowlers couldn't produce a breakthrough as Rahul and De Kock batted well in the powerplay and Gaikwad agreed they needed to bowl better in the first six overs.

"[Bowling in the powerplay] is one area we would like to improve, puts opposition on the back foot if we can get wickets in the powerplay. Good to play them again soon, will come back with homework done," he said.

The two teams will again face off on April 23 at Chepauk.

Because he had that in him, you can see that fire…He's always had that. That talent has always been there with him before he became the superstar. So he's very confident and he knew where he was going. I mean, yeah, of course very proud that I've known him since then. He hasn't changed.”

Before this, Chunky Panday's daughter, actress Ananya Panday, revealed that she spent a lot of time at Shah Rukh Khan's house during her childhood. In an interview with No Filter Neha, Ananya, who is best friends with Shah Rukh Khan's daughter Suhana Khan, talked about going on playdates at the superstar's house. The actress said, “I think he is just the kind of person… We didn't feel like that. He didn't make us feel like that. I don't think he makes anyone feel like that. He makes the person in front of him feel like the Badshah. He has this amazing quality about him.”

She added, “Shah Rukh sir is a very inclusive person. Like there was this year when KKR (Kolkata Knight Riders), they won their first IPL and he was like ‘it is because of you three, you are my lucky charm, you will always be with me'. So he always makes us feel special. When we were younger, I don't think we even realised this.”

Meanwhile, BFFs Suhana Khan and Ananya Panday cheered for SRK's Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on Sunday. The Shreyas Iyer-led side was up against Lucknow Super Giants.

On the work front, Shah Rukh Khan was last seen in Rajkumar Hirani's Dunki.

On Video, Deafening Sounds Of Gunfire Exchange Near Manipur Polling Booth

Gunshots were fired near a polling booth in Manipur this morning. A 25-second video circulating online shows commotion and people shouting before two shots are heard in quick succession.

A third shot is then heard, presumably in response to the first two. After this a volley of gunshots - possibly from an automatic weapon - is heard and the person filming the video ducks for cover behind a doorway. The rapid exchange of gunfire continues for 10 seconds before it stops.

The north-eastern state - which has two Lok Sabha seats - has been dealing with intermittent violence since May last year, when clashes between two ethnic communities left over 200 dead.

It is unclear in which of Manipur's two seats - Inner Manipur and Outer Manipur - the shots were fired. The Inner seat was won by the BJP's Thounaojam Basanta Kumar Singh in the 2019 election.

The Outer was won by Naga People's Front leader Kachui Timothy Zimik.

Suniel Shetty's Birthday Wish For KL Rahul Came Gift-Wrapped Like This

KL Rahul turned a year older on Thursday (April 18). On the special occasion, his father-in-law and actor Suniel Shetty dropped a sweet birthday wish for him. Suniel Shetty shared a photo wherein he, along with his son Ahan Shetty and son-in-law KL Rahul, can be seen lounging on a sofa. They were dressed in their casual best. Sharing the picture on his Instagram handle, he wrote, "They say it's not what we have in life, but who we have in our life that matters... feeling blessed to have you in ours for it's a connection I can't explain... happy birthday Rahul... love you son." For the unversed, Athiya Shetty and KL Rahul got married on January 23, 2023, after dating for nearly four years.

Take a look at the post below

Ahan Shetty also wished KL Rahul in a special way. He shared a photo with him on his Instagram story. In the picture, Ahan Shetty and KL Rahul could be seen taking a stroll. Sharing the image, Ahan wrote, "Happy birthday brother KL Rahul."

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

During his appearance on The Kapil Sharma Show, Suniel Shetty recalled his first meeting with cricketer KL Rahul. He said, "I had the pleasure of meeting Rahul first at an airport and was thrilled to learn that he was from Mangalore, my hometown. As a big fan of his, I was happy to see that he was doing well and was a good player."

He added, "When I came home and shared the news of my meeting with Rahul with Athiya and my wife Mana, they didn't say much initially but just exchanged looks with each other. Later, Mana came to me and said that Athiya and Rahul had started talking to each other but I am sure it is nothing more than that. I was surprised that Athiya had not mentioned it to me, and that it was her mother who shared the news. I was happy to know about Athiya as I used to always keep telling her to connect with south Indian boys. Also, Rahul's house is hardly 3-4 km away from my birthplace. So, this was a great co-incident."

ICYMI, KL Rahul and Athiya Shetty's wedding was an intimate affair with only close friends and family members in attendance. They exchanged wedding vows at Suniel Shetty's Khandala farmhouse.

On the work front, Suniel Shetty will next be seen in Hera Pheri 3.

"I Never Tear Down...": Zeenat On Mumtaz's "Marriage Living Hell" Barb

Zeenat Aman's Instagram post, which was merely meant to be a piece of advice on live-in relationships, has now snowballed into a controversy. In an Instagram post that Zeenat Aman shared a few days ago, she encouraged exploring the option of live-in relationship for the better understanding of one's partner. The post prompted a reaction from Zeenat Aman's Hare Rama Hare Krishna co-star Mumtaz, who in an interview with Zoom said that Zeenat Aman should refrain from giving relationship advice. "Her marriage was a living hell," Mumtaz said in the interview. Now, Zeenat Aman has responded to the statement. "Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I've never been one to comment on others personal lives or tear down my colleagues, and I'm not going to start now," Hindustan Times quoted Zeenat Aman as saying.

On April 10, Zeenat Aman shared her take on live-in relationships in an Instagram post. "One of you asked me about relationship advice in the comments section of my last post. Here's a personal opinion I haven't previously shared - if you're in a relationship, I strongly recommend that you live together before getting married! This is the same advice I've always given my sons, both of whom have had, or are in, a live-in relationship. It just seems logical to me that before two people get their families and the government involved in their equation, they first put their relationship to the ultimate test," Zeenat Aman wrote.

The veteran actress also addressed the society's reservations about live-in relationships and she added, "I'm aware that Indian society is a little uptight about "living in sin" but then again, society is uptight about so many things! Log kya kahenge?

Read Zeenat Aman's post here:

Earlier this week, Mumtaz said this about Zeenat Aman in an interview with Zoom, "Zeenat should be careful with what she is advising. She has all of a sudden come into this huge social media popularity, and I can understand her excitement about sounding like a cool aunty. But giving advice that is counter to our moral values is not the solution to increasing your following. Aap Zeenat ko hi le lo misaal ke taur par (Take Zeenat for example)... She knew Mazhar Khan for years before marrying him. Her marriage was a living hell. She should be the last person doling out advice on relationships."

Now, film veteran Saira Banu has also contributed to the ongoing rift. In an interaction with Hindustan Times, Saira Banu said, "I am not reading much and I don't really follow what they (Mumtaz and Zeenat Aman) are saying, but we are very old-fashioned people. Our trend is 40-50 saal pehle ka. Iss baat se main toh sehmat nahi ho sakti hu kabhi bhi. I would never advocate live-in relationships like that. It's something unimaginable and unacceptable for me."

Opinion: Fluid Friendships: Over A Quarter Of BJP Candidates Are Defectors

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

One out of four BJP candidates in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections are defectors from other parties. An analysis of the 417 candidates announced shows that 116 of them, that is 28%, have switched sides to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The highest number of such defectors, 37, are from the Indian National Congress.

In Indian politics, the phrase 'Aya Ram Gaya Ram' is often used to describe politicians who frequently switch parties. The story goes that Gaya Lal, an MLA from Hodal, Haryana, won the election as an independent candidate in 1967 and joined the Congress. Thereafter, he changed parties thrice in 15 days.

Between 1967 and 1983, there were approximately 2,700 defections at the state level. As many as 15 defectors went on to become chief ministers. This high number of defections led to the enactment of the Anti-Defection Law, the 52nd Amendment Act of 1985.

Even though the anti-defection law is in place, it is very easy to circumvent it. The Supreme Court's rulings on this matter have also not been enough to curb the malaise. Politicians now often resign from their original party, instead of formally 'crossing the floor' or voting against their party in a confidence motion. This sidesteps the law, while bringing down the party's strength in the House.

An analysis of 433 MPs and MLAs who changed parties and re-contested elections held between 2016 and 2020 shows that out of 405 MLAs who switched political parties, 182, almost 45%, joined the BJP. Out of 16 Rajya Sabha MPs who switched political parties, 10, that is over 60%, joined the BJP.

Here are five instances from recent history where democratically elected state governments have been toppled through defections.

1. Karnataka

A party or coalition needs 113 seats for a majority in the 224-member state assembly. The Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) (JD-S) formed a coalition government in 2018 with 115 MLAs. However, 13 MLAs of the Congress and three MLAs of the JD(S) resigned within 14 months, reducing the strength of the House to 208, and the majority mark came down to 105 seats. The BJP, which had exactly 105 MLAs, proved its majority and formed the next government.

2. Madhya Pradesh

The fall of the Kamal Nath-led government started with the resignation of Jyotiraditya Scindia from his seat in Parliament. Following this, MLAs loyal to Scindia, including six ministers, resigned. This led to the toppling of the Congress government in the state and paved the way for the formation of the Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led BJP government. Scindia was awarded by being made a minister in the Union cabinet.

3. Manipur

In the 2017 Manipur Assembly Elections, the Congress won 28 seats and the BJP 21. The majority mark in the 60-member House is 31. The BJP and its allies together had 30 seats. The BJP got a single Congress MLA to form the government. Later, eight other Congress MLAs lent their 'unofficial' support to the BJP. The Congress MLAs who supported the BJP never actually resigned from the Congress or issued letters of support for the BJP-led government. They even continued sitting in the Opposition benches to avoid violating the anti-defection law.

4. Arunachal Pradesh

After forming the government in 2014, Congress Chief Minister Pema Khandu took 43 of his party MLAs with him in 2016 and joined the People's Party of Arunachal (PPA), which was in alliance with the BJP. By the end of that year, 33 PPA MLAs joined the BJP and formed the government. Later, two more Congress MLAs defected to the BJP. Within a span of one year, mass defections brought the number of Congress MLAs down from 47 to just one.

5. Maharashtra

In 2019, the BJP won 105 seats, followed by the Shiv Sena with 56, the NCP 54 and the Congress 44. The majority mark in the 288-member House is 145. The BJP and the Shiv Sena were to form the government; however, they had a falling out. When the possibility of a non-BJP government was imminent, President's Rule was imposed in the state. On November 23, 2019, at 5.47 a.m., the Union government invoked Rule 12 of the Transaction of Business Rules, 1961, which empowered it to revoke the proclamation of President's Rule in Maharashtra without the prior approval of the Union Cabinet. This allowed the BJP a chance to form the government when it briefly gained the support of Ajit Pawar.

The resultant government lasted just 80 hours. Ajit Pawar and Fadnavis resigned. This led to the formation of a coalition government comprising the Shiv Sena, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Congress. In June 2022, a Shiv Sena member, Eknath Shinde, with two-thirds of the Shiv Sena MLAs, revoked support to the Uddhav Thackeray government and claimed to be the real Shiv Sena. Shinde and his MLAs then formed a government in coalition with the BJP, with former chief minister Fadnavis as his deputy.

These incidents highlight the urgent need to reassess the existing anti-defection law and give it more teeth. Blatant subversion of people's mandates must come to a stop.

This Billionaire Stood In Line To Get Job At Her Own Store. Read Her Story

In-N-Out's billionaire heiress Lynsi Snyder recently opened up about her past and revealed that she started working shifts at the burger chain founded by her grandparents as a teenager. In an interview with NBC's Today, Ms Snyder, who became the president of In-N-Out Burger at the age of 27, shared the story of her family-run burger business. She revealed that she started working at the restaurant chain as an associate in 1999, when she was just 17 years old. But she also said that she never wanted to be handed any opportunities courtesy of her surname.

According to Fortune, In-N-Out Burger was founded by Lynsi Snyder's grandparents in 1948. When her grandfather, Harry Snyder, died in 1976 the business was led by his sons Rich and Guy. Rich Snyder died in a plane crash in 1993, followed by the death of Ms Snyder's father, Guy Snyder, in 1999. At the age of 17, Lynsi Snyder was the last blood relative surviving of the burger dynasty.

However, speaking to NBC's Today, Ms Snyder said that she never wanted her family name to define her. She told the outlet that she stood in line for two hours to get a job at an In-N-Out restaurant in Redding, California when she was 17.

"I think that there's a stigma that can come with being the owner's kid," she said. "I just wanted to be respected like others, doing it the right way and not having the special treatment," the 41-year-old added.

Ms Snyder revealed that her first job at the burger chain involved doing minor jobs like chopping vegetables and serving customers. In fact, she previously said that no one knew her real identity except the manager of the store. This ensured she was not treated differently from other employees.

In 2024 Ms Snyder's net worth stands at $6.7 billion, according to Forbes. However, her family's painful history is never out of mind for her, she said. "It really was that family pain and tragedy that really put each leader in its place," she told the outlet.

The 41-year-old also revealed that in the early days of leading the business, she struggled to establish her identity within the company. "In the earlier days I actually wore pantsuits, and I did that because I felt like I was supposed to," Ms Snyder added. "And then I finally was confident in who I am and who I'm not. You're going to get judged either way, so you might as well be judged for being who you are," she continued.

Vir Das Shares Video Of Snake Encounter In Resort Bathroom

Actor-comedian Vir Das recently shared a video of his close encounter with a snake in the bathroom of his resort. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Mr Das posted the short clip with a brief note. In his tweet, he explained that he was spending the night at an eco-resort because he and his team were shooting nearby. However, what should have been a peaceful stay amidst nature took an unexpected turn when he entered the bathroom and the reptile fell from the ceiling.

"At an eco resort for the night because we're shooting nearby. Needed to take a piss. Opened up the bathroom door, stood over the pot, junk out, and before I began...a snake fell from the ceiling directly on to the water tank near the flush handle. Yup. Never peeing again," Mr Das wrote in the caption of his post.

Take a look below:

Separately, in a longer video posted on Instagram, Mr Das said that the snake fell from the ceiling right near the flush handle. In the clip, he is also heard asking a staff member of the resort if the snake is poisonous. The video shows the reptile trying - and failing - to wiggle out of the bathroom.

Since being posted, the video on X and Instagram has collectively amassed thousands of views. Reactions to the post ranged from scared to amused.

"Hope you're okay because I'm traumatized after reading this," wrote one user. "That's second reason I never goes to such resorts, first is obviously the budget," said another.

"this is like my worst nightmare and it somehow came true for you," expressed a third user. "This is the reason I never go to any nature or wildlife resorts. I don't think I have the courage to face wildlife other than on screen," commented a fourth.

"At an "eco resort" that's a feature and not a bug. Or in this case the right phrase would be - "that's a snake and not a bug like you would see at a cheap ass resort"!" wrote one user.

Meanwhile, on the work front, Vir Das will be seen in Ananya Panday's debut web series, Call Me Bae. He recently also won the International Emmy for Comedy at a ceremony in New York. This was his second nomination and first win. With his Netflix stand-up special 'Vir Das: Landing', the comic shared the Best Comedy Series award with the third season of the UK series Derry Girls. Vir Das was previously nominated in the same category in 2021 for the stand-up special named For India.
