Watch: Centuries-Old Shipwreck Washes Up On Canadian Coast, Sparks Mystery

A centuries-old mysterious shipwreck recently washed up on the Canadian coastline, leaving locals and officials puzzled. The 80ft ship was first spotted by Gordon Blackmore on January 20 while hunting for seabirds on the shores of Cape Ray on the Newfoundland coast. It is believed that Hurricane Fiona dislodged the vessel which is thought to have been built in the 19th century, as per BBC

Corey Purchase, owner of NiCor Photos posted a drone video on YouTube.

Watch the video here:

''This is a great, great event,'' Neil Burgess, president of the Shipwreck Preservation Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, told the Guardian

"If it's oak or beech or a hardwood species like that, it will tell us it wasn't made here in Newfoundland and was probably made over in Europe somewhere. There are databases of shipwrecks we can search for what was recorded as being lost around Cape Ray,'' Mr Burgess told UPI

He suspects the ship was freed by a combination of coastal erosion and the force of post-tropical storm Fiona, which destroyed homes in the region last year.

A local government team has now been dispatched to assess and preserve the wreck. Meanwhile, the event has sparked a mystery within the coastal community, which has been speculating about the wreck's possible origins. The community's local Facebook page has become a forum for the exchange of suggestions and maritime knowledge from across the globe.

''It is a part of our history that has just been awakened. Some descendants will still want to know the names and the places where their ancestors were lost in the icy waters off our shores. It would be good for all of us if we could offer some history we know and a place for remembrance. At least a marker. This is our history. Let's find out,'' wrote Elizabeth Gover, a resident.

Passenger Outraged Over Alleged Torture Of Dog On Akasa Bengaluru Flight

Prominent airline Akasa Air is under scrutiny following a damning account by a passenger who alleged a distressing experience during a recent flight from Ahmedabad to Bengaluru with his pet dog.

In a LinkedIn post, the passenger  Lakshay Pathak outlined significant issues that marred his journey. “Horrible experience with Pet Travel in Akasa Air,” he wrote.

“My wife and I were travelling with our pet Shih Tzu on 26th Jan Flight from Ahmedabad to Bangalore. The flight that was intended to leave at 10:20 pm left at 1:40 AM. It being our first time with pet travel we reached the airport 3 hrs in advance. So a delay of more than 3 hrs and we have already spent over 6 hrs in the airport,” he stated.

The passenger highlighted the unhelpful attitude of the ground staff and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), specifically noting their incompetence in handling pet-related queries. “On call & mail a very different picture was painted at buying a pet ticket for Rs5000 would enable comfortable travel of the pet,” he wrote and added, “Despite the huge delay the airport staff was adamant on not letting the pet ever out of the container. While sitting, thrice the airport security came and asked us to not even let him lie on the floor.”

He revealed, "There is no provision for pets to relieve themselves. All the washrooms in the airport have blowers that make a lot of noise, leaving no chance for pets to pee. Additionally, neither the ground staff nor the CISF assisted in terms of going out of the airport and coming back inside. The ground staff told me that I would be able to relieve my pet in the flight's washroom.”

Mr Pathak expressed frustration, stating, "There is no 'special seat' to accommodate pet travel, not even in the last row. For the first 45 minutes of the flight, my dog kept crying. To console him, I placed his container on my lap, allowing his head to breathe for a while. Apparently, this was also 'not allowed.' The pet is supposed to be near your leg space below the seat, and we all know how limited that space is."

Describing the flight crew as "untrained and unprofessional," Mr Pathak claimed that attempts to console his distressed pet by allowing it to breathe outside the container were met with resistance from a steward. The crew's lack of understanding regarding pet comfort during the flight further added to the passenger's frustration.

"If this is the treatment given to dogs in the cabin, I cannot imagine what treatment is given to those travelling in the cargo," Pathak stated. He questioned the value of the pet ticket, given the reported restrictions and lack of accommodation for the animal. “What is the Pet Ticket for? The torture that was provided?” he wrote.

Akasa Air is yet to release an official statement addressing these specific grievances.

Crisis-Hit Evergrande, Owing Over $300 Billion, Heads To Liquidation

China Evergrande Group received a liquidation order from a Hong Kong court, setting off what's likely to be a daunting process to carve up one of the biggest victims of a years-long and nationwide property debt crisis.

A wind-up will end up in the company being managed by provisional liquidators and addressing issues, including control by founder and Chairman Hui Ka Yan, Judge Linda Chan said in the city's High Court on Monday morning. Trading in Evergrande shares was suspended after the stock tumbled 21%, giving it a market value of just HK$2.15 billion ($275 million).

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

The ruling cements the homebuilder - carrying 2.39 trillion yuan ($333 billion) of liabilities - as the most prominent symbol of a real estate crisis that led to slower economic growth and a slew of defaults. The liquidation will be a test case of the legal reach of Hong Kong courts in China, where most of Evergrande's assets reside, with any new management also needing to navigate asset sales in an industry lacking liquidity and confidence.

"The market will pay close attention to what the liquidators can do after being appointed, especially whether they can achieve recognition from any of the three designated PRC courts" under a 2021 arrangement between China and Hong Kong, said Lance Jiang, restructuring partner at law firm Ashurst. "The liquidators will have very limited powers of enforcement over onshore assets in mainland China if they cannot get such recognition."

While Hong Kong's courts have issued at least three wind-up orders for other Chinese developers since the crisis began in 2021, none comes close to Evergrande in complexity, asset size, and the number of stakeholders. There are also few signs that the liquidation of Jiayuan International Group and Yango Justice International Ltd., a unit of Yango Group Co., are moving forward much.

Hong Kong's insolvency proceedings have limited recognition in China, whose courts may also appoint administrators in their own jurisdictions. That leaves open the question of the claims of the $17 billion of Evergrande's dollar bond holders covered in its proposed restructuring plan.

Most of Evergrande's dollar notes traded at around 1.5 cents on the dollar as of last Friday, an indication that investors have little expectations on repayment, according to Bloomberg-compiled data.

"The company has made all efforts possible and is sorry about the winding-up order," Evergrande Chief Executive Officer Shawn Siu said in the statement. "The company will ensure home deliveries and steadily promote normal operation of the group." It will also communicate with the liquidator, he said.

The petition for liquidation was filed in June 2022 by Top Shine Global Limited of Intershore Consult (Samoa) Ltd., which was a strategic investor in the homebuilder's online sales platform. Evergrande's offshore restructuring plan also covers $14.7 billion debt claims of other offshore liabilities, according to its restructuring document dated March.

While creditors weren't immediately seeking a wind-up order, Chan noted the lack of progress. "The company said it will do one, two, three," she said. "None of that has been done."

Still, "even after a wind-up, it's still possible for the company to put forward a scheme of arrangement," Chan said.

Chan, who has presided over a string of developer hearings, will conduct a hearing on a potential regulating order at 2:30pm Monday, according to information on the city's judiciary website. Such orders mean that the court would regulate the winding-up process, potentially including appointing a liquidator.

When Evergrande, which for a time in the last decade was the country's largest builder by sales, first defaulted on a dollar bond in December 2021, it sent a shock wave through China's markets with investors fearing contagion. Beijing has sought to put a floor to the real estate crisis, rolling out measures to revive home sales and provide liquidity to debt-laden developers.

Country Garden Holdings Co., also a former top builder, is now the focus for investors after its default in October. While Evergrande failed to reach agreement with its creditors, there's been a glimmer of hope for investors with the restructuring agreement for Sunac China Holdings Ltd. In November.

Evergrande proposed its last restructuring plan in January and aims to present new term sheets by March, according to participants in the Monday hearing that included legal representatives from Evergrande and its ad hoc bondholder group. That effort failed to buy Evergrande more breathing room.

Any court-appointed liquidator is likely to face a tricky process. Most Evergrande projects are operated by local units, which could be hard for the offshore liquidator to seize. Hui was also placed under police control in September on suspicion of committing crimes, which could complicate the proceedings.

The property market has continued to even as China introduced a slew of new measures to stem sinking prices and sluggish demand.

"The macroeconomic impact should be limited as the liquidation itself is unlikely to exert more pressure on the battered property sector," said Gary Ng, senior economist at Natixis SA. "However, it will worsen sentiment as investors will be worried that there is a snowball effect on other pending cases."

Evergrande's winding-up petition case number is HCCW 220/2022.

"My Beautiful Wife...": Bopanna On Life-Changing Chat After Aus Open Win

India's tennis star Rohan Bopanna became the oldest man to win a Grand Slam after he and his men's doubles partner Matthew Ebden won the Australia Open on Saturday. Bopanna (aged 43 years 329 days) and Ebden defeated Italy's Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori in straight sets 7-6, 7-5 in a thrilling encounter. This was only Bopanna's second Grand Slam succes, having won the the 2017 French Open in mixed doubles with Canada's Gabriela Dabrowski. After the final at the Rod Laver Arena, the 43-year-old credited his wife Supriya Annaiah Bopanna for his success.

Having said that, Bopanna's old quote on his wife has gone viral on social media. Earlier this month, Bopanna revealed how Supriya motivated him during his lean patch.

"My wife said it beautifully one day, 'when you change limitations to opportunities, everything changes.' We are always told at 25 this has to happen, by 30 this has to happen, at 40 this will happen. It's a thing which is told to us constantly, whether it is sport or life, whether it is marriage, having kids, whatever it may be. But when you change that into opportunities, then the limitations go away," Bopanna recalled, as quoted by ESPN.

After the final, Bopanna also reaveled that a few years ago he was thinking about his retirement from the sport.

"My beautiful wife, Supriya, & my daughter, Tridha.. thank you for all the support, all the love. I know a couple years ago I sent her a video message & said 'I'm gonna call it a day.' Because I wasn't winning matches at all. I went 5 months without winning a match. I thought that was gonna be the end of my journey. Perseverance inside me just kept me going. I really changed so many things & found a wonderful partner," he added.

With Ebden in company, Bopanna will soon will become the oldest number one in men's doubles history when the new rankings are released next week.

Watch: Bumrah Fumes, Then Blows Duckett's Stumps After DRS Blunder

India pacer Jasprit Bumrah wasn't a happy man as KS Bharat's advice to skipper Rohit Sharma cost him the wicket of England batter Ben Duckett on Day 3 of the first Test at Hyderabad. Bumrah seemed to have trapped Duckett in front of the stumps, prompting a loud appeal but the umpire turned it down. The India pacer was keen for the decision to be reviewed but wicket-keeper batter KS Bharat rushed to skipper Rohit Sharma and hinted that the ball could be going down the leg side. Rohit went with Bharat's suggestion.

When the replay was brought on the giant screen and ball tracking was shown, Bumrah was quite disappointed as the trajectory suggested that the ball would've hit the leg stump. Had India gone with the review, Duckett would've been given out.'

Bumrah was quite animated on the field upon realising that he was robbed of a wicket. But, in the next over, the veteran pacer dismissed Duckett by shattering his stumps. Bumrah's celebration to that dismissal signified how much the wicket meant to him.

It isn't common for Bumrah to celebrate the dismissals of batters in the manner he did in the case of Duckett. Understanding that he might not get another opportunity to dismiss the England star soon, Bumrah was understandably charged.

Bumrah didn't have to seek anyone's help the next, sending Duckett packing clean bowled. Duckett was England's top performer in the morning session of Day 3, scoring 47 runs off 52 balls before he had to return to the dressing room.

"There Was Pressure...": Report Alleges Favouritism In Delhi Ranji Squad

Delhi's Ranji Trophy campaign hit a new low on Friday after team's best batter Ayush Badoni, who is going through a rough patch, was asked to stay back in team hotel at the behest of powerful officials, who wanted to teach the "IPL star" a lesson. Keeping Badoni out of 15 didn't make much of a difference to Delhi's inept batting as Uttarakhand's medium pace bowlers shot them out for 147 in a Ranji Trophy group D match in Mohali. In five completed innings so far this season, Delhi batters have failed to cross 200 on three occasions and highest individual score is Vaibhaav Kandpal's 49 in last game. On the day, it was Yash Dhull's 47 and at stumps, Uttarakhand were 98 for four with Navdeep Saini getting three wickets.

However more than mere statistic, Badoni, who scored 41 in the last game and is perhaps the only player in current Delhi stable who is rated highly on national circuit, had to be put on chopping block to accommodate Kshitiz Sharma, who is believed to be close to a former BCCI office bearer.

"Yes, there was pressure to play Kshitiz and specifically to keep Badoni out of 15, so that he doesn't even get BCCI's allotted match fees. Only 15 players are entitled to BCCI match fees. Since he can't be allowed in PMOA (Players and Match Officials Area), it was thought that it would be better off to keep him in hotel," a senior DDCA official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

But why wasn't he even brought to the ground when could have watched the proceedings from adjoining VIP gallery? "The team managers would have had to arrange for his meals separately as BCCI wouldn't have paid for it and also during breaks or match, he couldn't have attended the nets as Punjab CA have their camp on. So it was better to keep him in hotel," the official, who is close to a DDCA director said.

There is a school of thought Badoni has lost focus after two seasons of IPL and keeping him in hotel was a way of teaching him a lesson.

"If Ayush would have scored a 100, those who desperately want to see him out of Delhi cricket wouldn't have got a chance to raise their voice and push for cricketers like Kshitiz, who don't deserve to be in the dressing room.

"Even he should take blame for not scoring runs," the senior official, who sounded helpless said.

Kshitiz, who many in Delhi consider a decent club level cricketer, shouldered arms to an innocuous Abhay Negi delivery pitched on length and just cut back enough to peg back the off-stump.

However it is understood that DDCA president Rohan Jaitley would crack the whip in case things go all awry after the current game.

"Rohan's heart is in right place but it is about time he takes some tough calls. If Kshitiz doesn't score runs in the second innings, the president's intervention would be required," the official added.

More disappointing was skipper Himmat Singh's manner of dismissal as Deepak Dhapola, who bowls in mid 120 clicks, bowled him through the gate.

Dhull, who was considered an India prospect long back, has been exposed badly with serious technical problems in his stance and set-up (shoulder and head falling across off-stump).

The manner of getting out has been identical as he gets squared up to deliveries on the channel like Devendra Bora did on the day.

Review: Karmma Calling - Heavy Lifting Is Left To Raveena Tandon

A murder on the beach shakes the swish set of Alibaug out of its self-obsessed stupor. Posited as both a preface and the probable final act of Karmma Calling, a seven-part Hotstar Specials series, the prelude points to what lies ahead for the denizens of the seaside enclave of the rich and the callously amoral.

A young woman with vengeance on her mind is on the prowl. The girl's prime target is a 1990s Bollywood diva-turned-socialite and her family. Protecting her turf comes easy to the obdurate matriarch. On the personal front, however, life isn't smooth sailing for her. Her husband strays and gets away with it. Her children do not see eye to eye with her.

As life goes on in the neighbourhood, dark secrets, pent-up rage, extra-marital liaisons, crass conspiracies, fake friendships and brazen betrayals come to the fore and upset a carefully constructed facade. The plot, busy and overheated, has momentum.

Karmma Calling moves back and forth in time to provide the context for the tale of vendetta. But it never quite shakes off its unremarkable by-the-numbers approach to a tale that has been told before.

In each episode, the revenge-seeker focuses her attention on an individual who - there is a whole bunch of them - wronged her and her upright dad two decades ago and went unpunished. She is now back to settle scores.

On her toes and unyielding, the lady is meticulous in her planning. More often than not, she catches her victims unawares and achieves her end. But despite the plethora of twists and turns that Karmma Calling throws at us, the show, adapted for India (from the American series Revenge) and directed by Ruchi Narain, is anything but an edge-of-the-seat humdinger.

The revenge that Karmma Calling served is cold - and stale. The picture-perfect setting and the glammed-up people who inhabit the space are overly inert when they aren't outright stodgy and dull. That is not to say that the show is wearisome all the way. It does spring to a bit of life now and then, but the truly intriguing, impactful moments do not last long enough to lend heft to the series.

An engagement party is disrupted when the man of the hour goes missing. He is found lifeless on a beach. Cut to six months earlier. The comely Karma Talwar (Namrata Sheth) rents and then buys an Alibaug bungalow next to the town's most famous address, Kothari Mansion.

The mansion is where Indrani Kothari (Raveena Tandon) lives with her perfidious husband Kaushal (Gaurav Sharma), Harvard-returned son Ahaan (Varun Sood) and restive daughter Mira (debutante Devangshi Sen).

The Kotharis are ruthless power players hand in gloves with other moneyed manipulators of their ilk. But all isn't obviously well in the household. Karma spots an opportunity in the deepening strife and looks for a vantage point from where she can launch her mission to bring down Indrani Kothari's family and business empire.

Private jets and ostentatious houses, charity galas and polo matches, intimate family dinners and flashy dandiya nights are an integral part of Indrani Kothari's life. The sudden appearance of the mysterious Karma Talwar puts her on her guard.

The family's head of security, Sameer (Vikramjeet Virk), and Indrani's assistant Yana (Amy Aela), are the wary lady's go-to people as she tries to figure out what has brought Karma Talwar to Alibaug. The audience obviously knows what she is up to so we are always a step ahead of the characters.

Karma's father (Rohit Bose Roy in a special appearance) was a senior employee of the company owned by the Kotharis. Framed in a bank loan scam that he had no hand in, his life and career were ruined. Justice for him is what his daughter now seeks.

All manner of people - a top lawyer-turned-MP (Shataf Figar) who aspires to be India's law minister, a healer (Alpana Buch) who runs a shady trust that receives donations from the Kotharis, Indrani's best friend Dolly Bhatia (Waluscha De Sousa) and, of course, Indrani's immediate family - are in Karma's line of fire.

Indrani and Kaushal's marriage hangs by a thread, their son has no patience for his mother's ways, and the daughter is a rebel determined not to play by the rules her mom sets. The two Kothari scions spark many a crisis as they seek to dismantle the social barriers that prevent them from venturing forth into the world and doing their own thing.

Karma schemes incessantly. She receives help, most of it unsolicited, from flamboyant entrepreneur Zane Khan (Viraf Patell). The man has links with her unhappy past. So does cafe owner Vedant Koli (debutant Rachit Singh). With neither of the two men is Karma's relationship easy.

As Karma and Ahaan drift into a tentative relationship, trouble mounts for the Kotharis and their acquaintances. The revenge-seeker's acts often threaten to recoil on her. But she is determined not to be deflected from her path.

It isn't a cakewalk. The woman Karma is up against is a formidable adversary not given to half measures. That apart, the latter's right-hand man is ready to go to any length to protect his boss. The battle of attrition between the two women serves the purpose of driving the series forward.

But as Karmma Calling darts from one thing to another, it frequently flounders and loses its way. Over-explication of character motives and plot points blunts the edge of the tale and pushes the series into a rather jaded loop.

In her second web series, Raveena Tandon is the pivot. She does not stop trying to hold Karmma Calling together but finds little significant support from the rest of the cast.

What most of the actors, including Namrata Sheth, who plays the show's principal character, bring to the table is nothing to write home about. They are adequate at best as they wait and wait for a miracle to occur and amp up the proceedings. Since that never happens, all the heavy lifting is left to Raveena Tandon. It weighs her - and the series - down.

Ashwin-Jadeja Make History, Shatter Kumble-Harbhajan's All-Time Record

India's spin twins, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, achieved a historic milestone on Day 1 of the first Test against England in Hyderabad. Bagging the first three wickets for India on the day, Ashwin and Jadeja went past the legendary spin pair of Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh in the list of most wickets for India as a pair. Ashwin and Jadeja went to a tally of 503 scalps as England went three down. Kumble and Harbhajan, on the other hand, had 501 wickets to their name in Tests for India as a pair.

Following Kumble and Harbhajan, the third pair on the list is that of Bhajji and Zaheer Khan. Between them, the spin-pace duo had bagged 474 wickets for India.

It was Ravichandran Ashwin who made the first breakthrough of the game after he dismissed Duckett in the 12th over of the match on Day 1.

The second wicket came when Ravindra Jadeja removed Ollie Pope (1 run from 11 balls) in the 15th over. Pope failed to make a mark in the game and put England in a better position.

The third wicket came soon in the 16th over after Ashwin dismissed the English opener, Crawley.

At lunch break, England was at 108/3, with Jonny Bairstow (32*) and Joe Root (18*) on the crease.

After winning the toss, the visitors decided to bat first in Hyderabad and Ben Stokes' decision did go in their favour as they crossed the 100-run mark in the 26th over.

Zak Crawley (20 runs from 40 balls) and Ben Duckett (35 runs from 39 balls) opened for England and put the visitors to a good start after they made a solid partnership of 55 runs. Crawley slammed three fours. Meanwhile, Duckett smashed seven fours.

Sharad Pawar's Nephew, Rohit, Appears Before Probe Agency In Bank Scam Case

NCP lawmaker Rohit Pawar, grand-nephew of party boss Sharad Pawar, appeared before the Enforcement Directorate Wednesday morning in connection with a money-laundering probe linked to the alleged Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank, or MSCB, scam

In a show of strength, Mr Pawar was escorted to the central agency's office in south Mumbai's Ballard Estate by senior members of the Nationalist Congress Party, including Working President Supriya Sule.

Before appearing at the ED office Rohit Pawar also visited his grand-uncle at the party HQ, a few hundred metres away, and sought his blessing; a video shared by news agency ANI showed Pawar junior, in a light blue shirt and khaki trousers, touching Sharad Pawar's feet. As he was going into the ED office Rohit Pawar, a first-time MLA from Karjat Jamkhed, said, "The officers are doing their job. Whatever documents they wanted, we have given. I will appear and whatever information they ask, I will give them."

Speaking to reporters outside the ED office, after Pawar junior went inside, a confident Ms Sule said, "We are going to completely cooperate with all the agencies because we have nothing to hide."

Ms Sule, however, also responded strongly to questions about claims by opposition parties that the ruling BJP uses central agencies like the ED, to target and harass rivals, particularly before elections.

"I cannot comment on it, I am going on data and it speaks for itself. In Parliament there was a reply given by the Government of India... that 95 per cent of cases by Income Tax Department, CBI, and ED are against people in opposition parties. I am not making this allegation... I have very little to comment."

Specifically, Ms Sule had been asked about reports Ajit Pawar - who is Sharad Pawar's nephew and was a close aide till he rebelled - has been dropped from a new ED chargesheet in the MSCB case.

Ajit Pawar led a breakaway faction of the NCP in July last year, and was made a Deputy Chief Minister in a state government led by the BJP and a rebel unit of the Shiv Sena.

The Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank scam relates to the alleged fraudulent disbursal of loans amounting to Rs 25,000 crore. The investigation was led by Mumbai Police's Economic Offences Wing under a FIR registered in August 2019. A petition before the Bombay High Court alleged some sugar mills had defaulted on these loans and, on default, were auctioned to office-bearers and politicians.

The initial case was closed in 2020 but the ED filed an intervention petition and began its inquiry.

On January 5, the agency searched the premises of Baramati Agro, a company owned by Rohit Pawar, and linked entities in Pune and other places. Last week Sharad Pawar hit out at the centre, accusing it of using the ED to "terrorise and silence political opponents".

What Is 'Golden Visa' Scheme For Super-Rich That Australia Has Scraped?

Australia has terminated its "golden visa" program, which granted wealthy foreign investors the privilege of living in the country.

In a policy document released in December 2023, the government announced the discontinuation of the golden visa, emphasising a shift towards creating more visas for skilled migrants capable of making substantial contributions to Australia.

The Australian government said that the program had not met its primary objectives and that it would instead focus on issuing more visas to skilled workers instead.

"It has been obvious for years that this visa is not delivering what our country and economy needs," Australian Minister for Home Affairs Clare O'Neil said on Monday.

Originally designed to attract foreign business, the golden visa scheme faced criticism over allegations that it was being exploited by corrupt officials for parking illicit funds.

Since its inception in 2012, thousands of significant investor visas (SIV) have been issued, with 85% of successful applicants hailing from China, according to government data.

Marketed as a means to drive foreign investment and stimulate innovation, candidates were required to invest over A$5 million (£2.6 million; $3.3 million) in Australia to qualify.

Clancy Moore, the CEO of Transparency International Australia, has applauded the decision, telling BBC, "For far too long, corrupt officials and kleptocrats have utilised golden visas to channel their illicit funds into Australia, potentially concealing the proceeds of their criminal activities."

Australia's move follows the UK's decision to end its fast-track residency scheme for the mega-rich in 2022, citing concerns about the influx of illicit Russian funds.

Similarly, golden visa programs have faced scrutiny in Malta as well, where speedy citizenship is granted to wealthy non-European Union nationals.

In 2022, an investigation revealed visas being granted after just a few days in the country, leading the EU to express concerns over potential risks of money laundering, tax evasion, and corruption.

'Disease X': WHO Warns Next Pandemic Could Be 20 Times Deadlier Than Covid

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Saturday emphasized the urgent need for global preparedness against a potential new pandemic, referred to as 'Disease X'. WHO's Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus urged countries worldwide to come together and sign a 'pandemic treaty' to tackle the deadly Disease X, which could be 20 times deadlier than COVID-19, reported Fox News

Mr Ghebreyesus, speaking in front of an audience at the World Economic Forum in Davos, said that he hoped countries would reach a pandemic agreement by May to address this "common enemy."

''There are things that are unknown that may happen, and anything happening is a matter of when, not if, so we need to have a placeholder for that, for the diseases we don't know," Mr Ghebreyesus said.

"We lost many people [during COVID] because we couldn't manage them. They could have been saved, but there was no space. There was not enough oxygen. So how can you have a system that can expand when the need comes?'', he added.

He further said that the WHO has already started implementing measures to prepare for another outbreak including the establishment of a pandemic fund and the creation of a ''technology transfer hub'' in South Africa.

''Equity. It was a serious problem. Many high-income countries were hoarding vaccines. To address the equity problem, we established the mRNA technology transfer hub in South Africa. This is to increase the local production...," he explained.

What is Disease X?

Disease X is not a specific disease but is the name of a potential virus similar to COVID-19. It could be a new agent, a virus, a bacterium, or a fungus without any known treatment. The global health body has categorised the unknown disease among Covid-19, Ebola, Lassa fever, Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), Nipah, and Zika, which have already caused widespread fatalities during outbreaks.

The Lancet said that the WHO formally started using the term in 2018, which represents the next unknown disease of epidemic potential.

WHO report from November 2022 mentions that Disease X is included to indicate an unknown pathogen that could cause a serious international epidemic. According to WHO, worldwide, the number of potential pathogens is very large, while the resources for disease research and development (R&D) are limited.

Sania Mirza's family on Sunday confirmed that the Indian tennis icon and Shoaib Malik have separated, a day after Pakistani cricketer announced his second marriage with actor Sana Javed. The 41-year-old Malik on Saturday posted his wedding picture with Sana on social media platforms.

The revelation comes amid long-standing rumours and speculation surrounding the strained relationship between Malik and Mirza, who got married in April 2010 in the Indian player's hometown of Hyderabad.

The rumours gained momentum when Malik recently unfollowed Mirza, 37, on Instagram, a move that further fuelled speculation about their marital discord.

They have a five-year-old son Izaan, who is currently living with Mirza.

Mirza, in a recent Instagram post, had alluded to personal struggles.

"Marriage is hard, Divorce is hard. Choose your hard. Obesity is hard. Being fit is hard, Choose your hard. being in debt is hard. Being financially disciplined is hard. Choose your hard," she posted in an instagram story.

"Communication is hard. No communicating is hard. Life will never be easy. I will always be hard. But we can choose our hard. Pick wisely." This Popular Children's Story "Frightened" UK's Queen Camilla As A Child

Britain's Queen Camilla recently revealed a popular children's story "frightened" her as a young child. Speaking on her new podcast, The Queen's Reading Room, the 76-year-old said that she was never a fan of the author Lewis Carroll because 'Alice in Wonderland' scared her when she was little. She admitted it was some of the characters that "frightened" her. She also said that she was fearful of Alice going down the rabbit hole.

Queen Camilla was quizzed on whether she preferred Lewis Carroll or Hans Christian Anderson - the author of The Little Mermaid and The Ugly Duckling. She said, "It's an awful thing to admit, but I've never really liked Lewis Carroll".

"I was rather put off by Alice going down that rabbit hole. It always really frightened me as a child. All the Mad Hatters and Red Queens and... it just wasn't my favourite," she added.

However, according to the Telegraph, the 76-year-old does not appear to have let her own views of Lewis Carroll shape those of others. 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' is one of the many books featured on her Reading Room website, recommended by authors William Boyd, Elif Shafak and Susan Hill.

Moreover, the actor Richard E Grant read Mr Carroll's 'All in the Golden Afternoon', the preface poem to 'Alice in Wonderland', at the inaugural Queen's Reading Room Literary Festival at Hampton Court Palace in June. According to the outlet, at a poetry recital attended by the Queen at a primary school in west London last August, two students performed Mr Carroll's Jabberwocky, dressed as the Mad Hatter and Alice.

Meanwhile, according to the Queen's Reading Room website, the podcast aims to promote the power and benefits of reading and is on a mission to help more people find and connect with books which enrich their lives. It was launched in 2021 during the Covid pandemic.

"As a charity, we produce accessible, free educational content around literature 365 days a year through our social channels and website; as well as literary festivals and events; research and campaigns," the website reads.

Review: Main Atal Hoon - Single-Note Biography

The Mumbai movie industry rarely, if ever, does justice to biopics, be they of personalities of contemporary relevance or of figures of historical significance. Main Atal Hoon, helmed and co-written by the National Award-winning director Ravi Jadhav (Natarang, Balgandharva, Balak Palak), does little to change that widely held belief.

If not a botched effort without any redeeming features, Main Atal Hoon carries creases that could have been avoided had the film not been such a rushed exercise. The hurry to wrap it up in time has clearly had a bearing both on the writing and the making. Jadhav is known to be a director with an eye for detail. That trait is conspicuous by its absence in Main Atal Hoon.

More hagiography than homage, Main Atal Hoon employs a from-the-cradle-to-the-grave approach to tell the story of the life of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Bharatiya Janata Party luminary and India's tenth Prime Minister. That is not to say that the patchy film straddles the entire spectrum of the rightwing leader's boyhood years and eventful political career.

It presents a bit of this and a bit of that as it flits from one high point to another in crafting a picture designed to evoke awe and reverence. The strategy works neither as drama nor as cinema because whatever conflict there is in the tale is studiously underplayed in order to emphasize how undeterred and unbudging (the accent being on the leader's given name, 'Atal') Vajpayee was.

Main Atal Hoon brings to the fore aspects of Vajpayee's life and times that serve the demands of the prevalent political climate but it is unable to put together a truly dramatic portrait of a statesman and an orator who encountered many ups and downs and ebbs and tides in the course of a long journey through the tumult of the freedom struggle, the vicissitudes of nation-building and the challenges of party work.

Main Atal Hoon is a single-note biography salvaged a touch - only a touch - by Pankaj Tripathi's central performance. The actor spares no effort to get into the skin of Vajpayee and imitating his body language and speaking style.

Tripathi's efforts do not bear the expected fruit because the screenplay on which the performance stands is hobbled by a lack of imagination and true insight. The blend of humanity and political expediency, political acumen and communication skills would have yielded much greater dividends had Jadhav and co-writer Rishi Virmani focused more on the questions that Vajpayee faced than on the answers that he found and delivered.

Main Atal Hoon meanders from one thing to another, intent solely on talking up the deeds that the real-life protagonist performed as a politician and Prime Minister. The complexities of subcontinental politics and the intricacies of ideological warfare in Parliament and outside of it are well beyond this film's limited purview.

It settles for simplistic and reductionist methods that take all the sharp edges away. Vajpayee's initiative to foster friendship between India and Pakistan and his journey on the Delhi-Lahore bus to attend a summit finds space in the narrative. However, his peacenik persona is allowed to be a mere footnote in a film that has been made to propagate a particular set of beliefs.

The allusion to the Kargil victory - it in now celebrated as Kargil Vijay Diwas - would have translated into something more substantial than it does in this film had it also factored in, if only in passing, the intelligence failure that led to the border conflict and its human cost.

The casting of Pankaj Tripathi as the politician is anything but perfect in terms of physical verisimilitude, but the actor manages to tide over the question of authenticity with a turn that comes pretty close to being perfect within the limitations imposed by the way the role has been conceived by the writers.

Inspired by a Marathi book, Sarang Darshane's Atalji: Kavihridayache Rashtranetyachi Charitkahani (The Story of a Poet-Leader), Main Atal Hoon is a literal depiction of Vajpayee as a poet and a politician endowed with outstanding oratorial flair. It is the latter persona that the lead actor brings out particularly well.

Would Main Atal Hoon been a markedly different film had the makers not been slavishly led by the book's title and dared to draw on the idea that a politician with a poet's temperament, a man who grew up with a love for the Hindi language and attained mastery over it, is a rarity in politics? No question about it - that would have led to a more rewarding film. But, then, it would not have served the avowed purpose of the project.

Delivered mostly with broad strokes that dwell on Vajpayee's personal associations and political affiliations, the film skims over many significant details and nuances that might have added up to an infinitely more rounded, analytical and dispassionate portrait rather than the unalloyed paean that it has turned out to be.

There are elements in the film that had tremendous potential - Vajpayee's relationship with his father (played by Piyush Mishra) and his lasting friendship with Rajkumari Kaul (Ekta Kaul) are cases in point - but the script deigns to treat them the way it treats everything else at its disposal, as just a piece to fit into the larger picture.

In a purely cinematic sense, it is impossible to be enthused over what Main Atal Hoon has to offer. But in the context of the film's undisguised raison d'etre, it may not be a total washout. It might find takers beyond the folds of those who demand greater critical depth and range in Bollywood biopics only to be disappointed time after time.

Watch: Kohlis Strong Reaction As Rohit, Nabi Argue Over 'Sportsmanship'

India captain Rohit Sharma was involved in an intense chat with Afghanistan veteran Mohammad Nabi during the first Super Over of the 3rd T20I in Bengaluru on Wednesday. A throw from India wicket-keeper Sanju Samson hit Nabi's pad from behind and resulted in a big deflection, with Afghanistan deciding to make the most of the opportunity by running two extra runs. Rohit, fuming at the ‘unsportsmanlike' decision, argued with both Nabi and the umpire about the unfair advantage that the visiting team got. But, the runs continued to be counted.

Nabi, on his part, seemed to have put forth the point that he didn't deliberately come in the line of the throw, and hence, he had the right to make the opportunity count.

Here's the video:

Even Virat Kohli, who stopped the ball after the deflection, pointed at legs, signalling that Nabi shouldn't have taken the additional double as the ball had hit him.

Former India cricketer, Aakash Chopra suggested that the Men in Blue wasn't right in arguing for that game of play in which the player ran two extra runs.

"A bye was taken off the last ball. Sanju Samson threw the ball, it hit Nabi's leg and they ran two extra runs. One was available and India gave one because they were complaining about the spirit of the game. India were wrong in complaining. You could have restricted them to two runs and you conceded a third just like that," he said on his YouTube channel.

The cricketer-turned-commentator further gave an example of a World Cup final to explain his statement.

"My question is, assuming had it been the last ball of a World Cup final and the extra run you were getting after the ball hit the pads was deciding the match, would anyone not run there? Would anyone be ready to lose the World Cup by not taking that run because it is ethically incorrect? Everyone would have run," the former India opener explained.

The extra double didn't cost the Indian team much as Rohit Sharma's men won the contest in the second Super Over after the first one was tied.

Auto Rickshaw Seen On Atal Setu Violating Traffic Rules, Internet Reacts

Adding a 21.8-km feather to the country's infrastructure cap, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link between Sewri in Mumbai and Nhava Sheva in Raigad district on Friday. However, just hours after the bridge was thrown open to the public on Saturday, many people were seen flouting rules and regulations. Amid this, an auto rickshaw was seen violating the traffic restrictions imposed by the Mumbai Traffic Police on the Atal Setu.

A picture of the same was posted on X by user Saravanan Radhakrishnan on Monday. Several people wondered how the three-wheeler got there and tagged the Mumbai Police to take action against the driver.

"How did it make it till here? There is a toll booth on Chirle and Ulwe side and for the Mumbai side, it starts in SoBo where Autos are just not allowed any way," said a user.

"Atleast it didn't halt for the Photo OP," commented a person.

A third added, "Auto Setu"

"Technically, he has already warned by writing at the back of the rick, 'FIR Milenge'," said another user.

"@MTPHereToHelp @Navimumpolice please raise chalan on this auto driver who ride on Atal Setu," remarked a user.

It is to be noted, Mumbai Traffic Police had informed about the restrictions on the entry of tractors, three-wheelers, tempo, motorcycles etc. "Entry of the following vehicles: Motor Cycle, Moped, 3 Wheeler Tempo, Auto Rickshaw, Tractor, Tractor With unladen trolley, Animal Drawn Vehicles & Slow Moving Vehicle will not be allowed on MTHL," they wrote on X on January 11.

Recently, photos and videos also surfaced on social media showing people littering and climbing the railing to take selfies, in a complete disregard of rules, making the Atal Setu a "picnic spot". One video also showed a couple crossing the bridge ladder to alight on a viewing platform. Reacting to the posts, Mumbai Police issued a warning on social media, threatening to take strict action on stopping vehicles on Atal Setu. ''We agree that Atal Setu is definitely 'worth a watch' but it's also illegal to stop on it & click photos. You will face an FIR if you stop on MTHL."

Notably, the trans harbour link is India's longest sea bridge and will reduce the time taken for the journey between the two points from the current hour and a half to around 20 minutes. Constructed at a cost of Rs 17,840 crore, the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link has six lanes, and 16.5 km of the bridge's length is over the sea.

Box Office: Hanu-Man Is 2024's First Hit With Higher Weekend 1 Than KGF

Prashanth Varma's Hanu-Man is making all the right noises at the box office. The film, which is touted as the first Telugu-language superhero movie, is rewriting record books and how. Released on January 12, Hanu-Man's business in its opening weekend has surpassed the collection of Hindi versions of blockbusters like KGF: Chapter 1, Kantara and Pushpa: The Rise for the corresponding time frame. This amazing development was announced by trade analyst and film critic Taran Adarsh on Monday, in a post on X (formerly Twitter). The trade analyst revealed that the film on day 3 minted ₹ 6.06 crore (Hindi version) at the domestic box office. After this, the film's total business now stands at ₹ 12.26 crore at the Indian box office. While sharing the poster of the film, Taran Adarsh crowned the film as the “first hit of 2024”.

Sharing the poster of Hanu-Man's titular character played by Teja Sajja, Taran Adarsh wrote, “Here's a big surprise… Hanu-Man first *3-day* [opening weekend] total is higher than KGF [first part] and Kantara, at par with Pushpa [note: all Hindi dubbed versions]… Yes, you read it right! Hanu-Man emerges first hit of 2024… Packs an impressive total in its opening weekend… While mass pockets continue to dominate, the national chains have also joined the party… Friday 2.15 crore, Saturday 4.05 crore, Sunday 6.06 crore. Total: ₹ 12.26 crore. India business. Note: Hindi version. Going forward, the strong hold in mass sectors is a big plus, since these pockets will be driving its biz on weekdays… Also, as highlighted yesterday, a lack of major releases - till Fighter [25 January] - should help Hanu-Man cement its status. Telugu version in North India: Friday 24 lacs, Saturday 40 lacs, Sunday 45 lacs. Total: ₹ 1.09 crore.”

Hanu-Man is one of the several Tamil and Telugu films to have been released during the Pongal/ Sankranti weekend. The numbers show that Hanu-Man is winning the Sankranti race at least in the Telugu states. However, as per reports, the makers of the film have registered a complaint over unfair theatre practices with the Telugu Film Producers Council. As per Hindustan Times, Producer Niranja Reddy has alleged that a few theatres that had agreed to screen Hanu-Man on January 12 had refused to do so. The makers' statement read, “The theatres did not screen the movie Hanu-Man as per the agreement. The distributors and producers suffered huge losses. So these theatres must immediately start showing the movie Hanu-Man and bear the loss so far.”

Meanwhile, film critic Saibal Chatterjee, in his review for NDTV, gave Hanu-Man a 2.5-star rating. He wrote, “The first hour or so of the 158-minute movie is devoted to setting the stage for the grand transition - the man's extraordinary leap into the league of superheroes as the world knows them. It is only after 40 minutes of meandering through his light-hearted shenanigans and comic misadventures that Hanu  Man reaches the point from where the essential classic confrontation between good and evil can begin.”

Apart from Teja Sajja, Hanu-Man features Amritha Aiyer, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Deepak Shetty and Vennela Kishore in important roles.

Every Fingerprint Is Not Unique, Reveals New AI Study

We have always heard that each fingerprint on a person's hand is unique. However, this theory is currently being contested by a Columbia University study. Recently, an artificial intelligence program was trained by a team at a US university to analyse 60,000 fingerprints in an attempt to determine which ones belonged to the same person. According to the researchers, the system can determine if fingerprints belong to a single individual with 75-90 per cent accuracy, as per a report in CNN

Gabe Gua, an undergraduate student in Columbia's computer science programme, oversaw a research team on the topic, with University of Buffalo professor Wenyao Xu serving as one of his co-authors. Published this week in the journal Science Advances, the report seemingly upends a long-accepted fact about fingerprints. The scientists used an AI model known as a deep contrastive network, which is frequently used for tasks like face recognition, to arrive at the study's conclusions. After giving it their spin, the researchers fed the data from the US government database in pairs, some of which came from the same individual (but on different fingers) and others from different persons.

It was then discovered that fingerprints from different fingers on the same person had significant similarities. As a result, it was able to distinguish between fingerprints belonging to the same person and those that weren't, with a single pair's accuracy peaking at 77 per cent, seemingly refuting the idea that each fingerprint is distinctive.

Mr Guo said, "We found a rigorous explanation for why this is the case: the angles and curvatures at the centre of the fingerprint."  The researchers believe that the AI tool analysed the fingerprints differently than conventional techniques, emphasising the direction of the ridges in the middle of the finger rather than minutiae-the places where individual ridges stop and split. "They are great for fingerprint matching, but not reliable for finding correlations among fingerprints from the same person. And that's the insight we had," he added.

The authors acknowledged that there could be biases in the data. The study added that even while they think the AI system functions mostly the same for both racial and gender identities, more thorough research of a more comprehensive collection of fingerprints is necessary before the technology can be used in real forensics.

"The most immediate application is it can help generate new leads for cold cases, where the fingerprints left at the crime scene are from different fingers than those on file. But on the flip side, this won't just help catch more criminals. This will also actually help innocent people who might not have to be unnecessarily investigated anymore. And I think that's a win for society," he stated.

Ignored India Star Takes 5 In Ranji. Fans Remind BCCI About Ruined Career

Six years since his appearance in the Ranji Trophy, Bhuvneshwar Kumar marked his return to India's premiere domestic red-ball tournament in style on Friday. Bhuvneshwar led Uttar Pradesh's fightback against Bengal at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur, claiming a five-wicket on Day 1 of the contest. After UP were bowled out for 60 in their first innings, Bhuvneshwar bagged a five-for to restrict Bengal to 95/5 at Stumps. The 33-year-old started his spell with wickets of Sourav Paul and Sudip Kumar Gharami, respectively, before dismissing getting Anustup Majumdar, captain Manoj Tiwary and Ishan Porel.

For the record, Kumar hasn't been part of India's Test squad since 2018 and was last seen against South Africa. He last played a Test in Johannesburg almost six years ago.

With India set to play a five-match Test series against England, starting later this month, fans have urged the selectors to give Bhuvneshwar a second chance, especially with premiere pacer Mohammed Shami out injure.

Here are some of the reactions:

Speaking of the match, Bengal captain Manoj Tiwary had won the toss and opted to bowl first in Kanpur.

For Uttar Pradesh, Samarth Singh, Aryan Juyal and captain Nitish Rana the only ones to get to double figures.

For Bengal, Mohammad Kaif was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4/14, while Suraj Jaiswal and Ishan Porel took three and two wickets respectively.

In response, Shreyansh Ghosh's unbeaten 37 allowed Bengal to take a 35-run lead on Day 1, which was dominated by bowlers.

Video Of "10-Foot-Tall" Human-Like Creatures In Brazil Shocks Internet

A video showing two human-like creatures on top of a hill at an island in Brazil is graining traction on social media. It has sparked buzz about aliens visiting on Earth. According to a New York Post report, the beings were 10-foot-tall and were spotted at Ilha do Mel, an island more than three kilometres off the coast of Southeast Brazil. The second one was standing close by, the outlet further said. Their appearance on the hilltop sparked buzz among locals who said it is difficult to reach, with the shrubbery barely reaching their knees.

The beings were seen swinging their arms in a human-like manner, but eyewitnesses were not convinced that they are humans, said the Post report.

"It's too big to be a person," one local is heard saying in the video, according to a translation by JB Litoral.

"Look at the way he moves, it's really weird! Look at the size... and it's very fast," said another.

The clip comes days after a footage of some people claiming a 10-foot-tall alien had been strolling through a Miami mall went viral.

The latest video has been posted on various social media platforms, including Instagram, and shocked users.

"For me it's enough to see the speed with which this creature goes down the hill. Anyone who has done trails on hills like this knows that you don't go down a hill like this in 1-2 minutes," commented one Instagram user.

"The way they move reminds a lot of the Men in Black critters," said another.

"One thing I do know... I will never step there again," a third user wrote.

Even the provincial government in Brazil joined the fun online, but did not confirm whether the figures were actually tourists.

"Surreaaaaaaal what happened on Ilha do Mel!!! Great Summer at Parana is another story and even "strange beings" came to check it out," the state government of Parana, wrote on X.
